House Intelligence Committee chair, Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., said the allegations will become part of his panel's investigation. The committee 'will make inquiries into whether the government was conducting surveillance activities on any political party's campaign officials or surrogates,' Nunes' statement read.
While on the Senate side, Intelligence Committee member, Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., said 'I’m sure that this matter will be a part of that inquiry,' during a discussion on Fox News Sunday. How are the Republicans going to thread the needle on this one? If there was surveillance of Trump, they would also need to go into WHY it was happening and that ends up being the can of worms that damages the Republicans. Merely saying "he was surveiled" isn't going to cut it. The full story would have to come out - if it doesn't then it makes the Republicans look dishonest. |
Great, as long as they're investigating the Trump campaign collusion with Russians at the same time. I guess they'd have to if they are going to review any intelligence that's out there relating to this supposed surveillance.
I guess a backwards way into getting the Russian connection investigated, but I'll take it. |
I'm wondering if POTUS might actually have some evidence of wiretapping. Maybe he was in contact with the Russians himself, and so was caught up in surveillance that was levied against the Russians. Given the tenuous connections to facts many of his supporters need, if there is even a whiff of truth to this allegation it would be enough to deflect and discredit anything that was found through surveillance...even if the surveillance was legal and the findings were damning. I mean, again, it's *this* POTUS so all of this might be giving him too much credit for strategery...but it could be an advantage he ends up stumbling into. |
It's the only game plan they've got for making it NOT about Trump. Republicans aren't going to do their jobs on this. They're going to do the White House's bidding. To me, that says this is as bad as it looks and probably worse. |
Trump keeps saying he was wiretapped in Trump Tower, but wouldn't it be more likely that Russian government agents were under surveillance/having their calls secretly monitored (which the government does with all foreign leaders, and they all do the same to us), and conversations of theirs with the Trump campaign were then found? I REALLY don't get what he hopes to accomplish by going public with this. |
I think he doesn't know. But a wilier man might be hoping to discredit any information against him that comes from surveillance, whether it was improperly targeted at him (unlikely) or legally targeted at Russians (more likely). The latter is what brought Flynn down. I'm guessing it's more likely that there might have been contact with other members of POTUS's inner circle than POTUS himself, but who knows. It might even be one of his sons or SIL. |
He's just diverting the media and us from whatever dirty work he has up his sleeve. |
Yes, of course that's the most likely scenario and Trump's camp knows that. They've also known for at least six weeks that there's intelligence on their dealings with Russia. If they had a problem with learning that they'd been under surveillance, they'd have raised it then. Six weeks to come up with a strategy and the best they can do is return to the campaign playbook. Blame Hillary/Obama. |
Wow, so they probably know the truth but they're still trying to claim "OBAMA WIRETAPPED ME PERSONALLY BECAUSE HE HATES MEEEEE!" That's .... well, that's something. It takes balls, I'll give them that. |
Go for it! I'm 100% behind investigating any election irregularities. Zero concern.
But... why are the republicans so hesitant to investigate? Why no select committee? Why no open hearings? |
I am all for investigation by an independent prosecutor. I want to know absolutely all the details of Russia's involvement. So we all agree then. |
Maybe it will be, but Comey has asked DOJ to publicly state that there was no wiretapping of Trump, saying it didn't happen.
If they do, it will be a remarkable rebuke of a sitting president. "The F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, asked the Justice Department this weekend to publicly reject President Trump’s assertion that President Barack Obama ordered the tapping of Mr. Trump’s phones, senior American officials said on Sunday. Mr. Comey has argued that the highly charged claim is false and must be corrected, they said, but the department has not released any such statement. Mr. Comey made the request on Saturday after Mr. Trump leveled his allegation on Twitter. Mr. Comey has been working to get the Justice Department to knock down Mr. Trump’s claim because there is no evidence to support it and it insinuates that the F.B.I. broke the law, the officials said." https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/05/us/politics/trump-seeks-inquiry-into-allegations-that-obama-tapped-his-phones.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=first-column-region®ion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news |
By calling for investigations, he legitimizes democratic calls for investigations that the GOP is trying to avoid. |
Thank God. Someone has to stand up to this bully. |
