We've cut way back since having kids (ages 3 and 5). I was wondering what most other families do/spend.
We find the beach to be a good place for our kids. We haven't figured out when we'd do Disney yet. Maybe next year?? Right now we do the following: A long weekend (4 days) in Florida in Feb/March - just costs us the plane tickets and some dinners out as we stay with my parents ($600) A long weekend(5 days) in early summer to a local resort place - approx $1,600 plus dining. A week beach house rental that we share with friends - $3,000 plus half the groceries for the week and a couple nights out. What do you do? |

Almost nothing. We don't have enough vacation days to cover vacations, school closings, sick days, plus visiting family. (Also have small children, definitely was not the case pre-small children!)
Visiting my parents costs us a couple tanks of gas and some food on the road. Visiting his will now cost 4 plane tickets and a rental car. We haven't done it since we had a 2nd kid though H and our oldest are going this summer so we can avoid the car rental thing and just cover the 2 plane tickets, airport food, and food/tickets to whatever they do out there. |

This has been posted many times so if you are truly interested you might want to do a search.
We are at a high income level so we spend more. Not sure it is necessarily instructive though. Winter break ski trip was about $10k for 4 people. Going on another western ski trip in March that will be much less because airfare is free, maybe $4k. We spend much of the summer at the beach, although it's not all vacation. There isn't a rental cost but the cost of owning a house is pretty high. We drive there. Food is not much different than food here so I don't count that as a cost. We are planning a week in Europe in the fall to visit a friend. Airfare will probably be free, so maybe $5k on that trip? Plus various weekends (parents weekend at college, which requires a flight and hotel), a couple of ski weekends, DH is coming with me to FL for a work trip in March, etc. I travel a lot for work so sometimes add a weekend trip if it's to someplace good. |
| We bring a nanny on our vacations and tack vacations on to international travel for work. We are also somewhat prissy and would not consider camping to be fun or relaxing - our vacations involve luxury hotel suites and such. We're easily spending low six figures on vacations. |

-$25K a year to own a beach house; 2-4 weeks each summer plus all weekends.
-$10K on an international trip for spring break. -$2K on odds and ends like a few weekends of local skiing. HHI $390K; 3 school aged kids. |
Same, except we put all of our extra income into fertility treatments because we've been trying for two years to have a second child. |
|
HHI $250K. 2 middle school kids
We take one big family trip in the summer for 1-2 weeks and that is usually around $8-$10K Spring break visiting family out-of-state probably runs $2K A couple other weekend trips throughout the year add maybe another $2-$3K So maybe $15K total. |
I'm sorry. I'm the previous poster with 3 kids. We went through this period of life as well as we had to do IVF for our 3 kids (two pregnancies). We scrimped and saved every dollar. I hope you're out of this phase soon and able to vacation again. |
Thank you so much. Don't mean to derail the thread. I do long for vacations, but if we can get our rainbow baby out of this, I'll have no regrets. |
Close to 40K per year on vacations with HHI of ~400K? How retirement and college savings look? Seems like a lot. |
|
$8-9k/year. HHI: $235k
That includes: Spring break: $4,000 2 weeks beach $3,500 Weekend trips to friend's house on bay: $200/trip Week a friend's lake house: $500. |

Hi: $580,00
2 teens $30,000 to $40,000 a year. 2 big trips and several weekend getaways. |
| We spend around 30k per year and we also tag along to DH's conferences if they are in a good location (CA, AZ or FL). |
|
HHI: $250-300k; married with one child
We usually spend between $7k-12k on travel. |
| For the two of us, 15K |
