How much do you spend in a year on vacations?

Anonymous
Hhi $160k. We probably spend $10-15k on vacations. 2 week road trip in summer $5k. 5-10 weekend trips, $5k. Spring break $2k. Maybe another week or long weekend. This is the first year we are doing a "big" vacation, i.e., flying somewhere. Probably Europe or Costa Rica. I am not a homebody, and really need to be on the move.

Family of 8, $210k income, about $1500 a year for travel. We rent a cabin two to three times a year, somewhere rustic or farmy. Once a year we do a road trip down to grandparents in NC. Everything else goes to retirement and school tuition.

-DE beach 3-5 times each year (one full week plus long weekends): $3k?

-Spring break trip (Caribbean, cruise or some such): $6-8k?

-NYE overnight (plus festive activity):$750?

-Thanksgiving weekend trip: $800?

That's a good ball park. My DH would probably say we spend more.

-Misc. day trips, long weekends, etc.: $2-3k?

You make 160K in DC, have 4 kids, and spend 10% of your income on vacations?

HH income is $290k. One kid. We spend 10-15K on vacations depending on the year. No debt other than our mortgage.

We make 360k and spend between 10-15k a year.

Most years. So?

We live in MoCo, and our mortgage is very low since we purchased a reasonably priced home and were able to put down 50%. We live rather frugally (no cleaning service, no lawn service, old cars, etc.). And we don't have significant child care costs since all our kids are in school (public school).

People have commented that we travel a lot, and they hint that they wish they could afford to. From what I've observed, most people piss away money. Tally up how much you spend eating out each month. Tally up how much you spend on beer, wine and booze each month (at home or going out). We don't have car payments since we don't regularly trade up. We would rather travel than drop thousands on fancy furniture or cosmetic home renovations. YOLO.

$7K in travel

1 week beach vacation ~$2000 (go in June when it's still "off season"
1 10-day Christmas vacation to Florida each year ~$3000 (book hotels early like Springhill Suites, nothing too fancy)
1 "other" 7-day driving vacation somewhere around the US/Canada ~$2000

Where do you stay when you take your beach vacation? I'm just trying to figure out how to make a beach vacation work for our family, since we've never taken one before.

We stay in a hotel in Cape May, New Jersey. Cost is about $200 per night and has a kitchenette, so we generally eat breakfast in the room. Lunch is often sandwiches by the pool. Dinner is either a restaurant, pizza or barbeque. It's not fancy or luxurious, but it's relaxing and low-key. You could do something similar at many beaches - Ocean City, NJ or OCMD, VA Beach, Bethany, etc.

Thanks PP, I'll definitely look into it. Also interesting that June is considered off season still.

Every hotel has a different calendar on what they consider "in season." It pays to shop around and find one that is still "off season" or is otherwise reasonably priced.

It is all relative, right? My kids are older than yours and a joy to travel with. We also have 6k in disposable income left over each month after all expenses, including automatic savings. We love travelingbto different places and are not really interested in using vacation time tk go to local beaches, so we spend a lot.

$0. We bought a new house and all our money is going to that. I am looking forward to vacations again one day but not for awhile.

So you have college fully funded for all 4 kids?

Why is that a prerequisite for traveling with your kids when they are young? They will have far more life experience than those who never travel - so what if they have to take some amount of $ as student loans when they go to college or, gasp!, work and earn some of the money for themselves?

You tell them PP.
We haven't taken a vacation in a couple of years and I really wish we would prioritize vacationing and having great experiences with our kids.

I hear ya! We are a two income home and basically the ONLY reason I work is for a 401k with a full match (so we can travel a ton in retirement) and so we can travel now a lot. I use every day of my 5 weeks a year i get off on travel. We do one big international trip a year (last year Rawanda, yes rawanda!) and this year is Peru and the Inca trail. Both of those take up 2 weeks each. This year the domestics are Acadia, Scottsdale, and Nashville.

Our kids have the travel bug something fierce. They now make connections between what they are learning in school to where they have been. What they have learned from travel is unlike anything they could experience in school. They were in shock when we spent a 2 days in Mumbai when in India. The spactacle and masses of people was insane.

So, no, you don't have much money saved for the four college tuitions. Thanks for answering.
