How much do you spend in a year on vacations?

Anonymous
$5k on average.

It's our thing and we save and make cuts in other ways so we can splurge on travel.

-$10K on an international trip for spring break.
-$2K on odds and ends like a few weekends of local skiing.
HHI $390K; 3 school aged kids.

Close to 40K per year on vacations with HHI of ~400K? How retirement and college savings look? Seems like a lot.

I don't see why it's a lot since they are left with a very nice income after they spend on vacations.

It's a lot but they can afford it

Right. That's what I meant.

Hmmm. My HHI is closer to 600K. 40K a year goes to private school - I view it as a HUGE expense that I am anxiously looking forward to being done with. 400K a year in DMV is an UMC income - spending 10% on vacation seems like a lot to me.

Where do you stay when you take your beach vacation? I'm just trying to figure out how to make a beach vacation work for our family, since we've never taken one before.

We stay in a hotel in Cape May, New Jersey. Cost is about $200 per night and has a kitchenette, so we generally eat breakfast in the room. Lunch is often sandwiches by the pool. Dinner is either a restaurant, pizza or barbeque. It's not fancy or luxurious, but it's relaxing and low-key. You could do something similar at many beaches - Ocean City, NJ or OCMD, VA Beach, Bethany, etc.

HHI is $300k. This year we'll spend $10k on a big summer vacation; $5k on a couples getaway and $5k total on a few trips to visit far-flung family.

It depends on where we go. We take our kids to their dad's in OK every June, and go back to get them around the first of August (we do it this way because my older son lives out there and we stay with him and spend time with him). In June, we usually make a nice side trip on the way home. This year we are dropping my youngest at his dad's (he doesn't want to go further) and are then going to California and up the coast to Seattle with our two teens, then back down to their dad's, and staying a few days with my older son. My husband has three weeks of vacation since he's three years from retirement, so we have plenty of time to drive around. We love to drive, and love the time spent together. It's really not that expensive. Around $3k every summer.

Thanks PP, I'll definitely look into it. Also interesting that June is considered off season still.

We are at a high income level so we spend more. Not sure it is necessarily instructive though. Winter break ski trip was about $10k for 4 people. Going on another western ski trip in March that will be much less because airfare is free, maybe $4k. We spend much of the summer at the beach, although it's not all vacation. There isn't a rental cost but the cost of owning a house is pretty high. We drive there. Food is not much different than food here so I don't count that as a cost. We are planning a week in Europe in the fall to visit a friend. Airfare will probably be free, so maybe $5k on that trip? Plus various weekends (parents weekend at college, which requires a flight and hotel), a couple of ski weekends, DH is coming with me to FL for a work trip in March, etc. I travel a lot for work so sometimes add a weekend trip if it's to someplace good.

I am glad you pointed this out.....the OP could have done a search and was too lazy to do so.

DCUM isn't wikipedia you jerk. People are allowed to ask questions even if they've been asked before. Do a search on that!

Family of six with a HHI of $160.

-DE beach 3-5 times each year (one full week plus long weekends): $3k?

-Spring break trip (Caribbean, cruise or some such): $6-8k?

-NYE overnight (plus festive activity):$750?

-Thanksgiving weekend trip: $800?

That's a good ball park. My DH would probably say we spend more.

-Misc. day trips, long weekends, etc.: $2-3k?

I think so, for "average" families.

the average affluent American (those with over $1 million in investible assets) spends a total of $13,249 a year on leisure travel.

It sounds like "average" spending for more average net worth households is somewhere between $1800 - $2200/trip, and I don't know a lot of average-income/asset households that are taking multiple trips a year.
