But the volunteer shifts start earlier than the meet. Concessions and Marshall starts at 5. Timers have to be there by 5:30 |
Well, the point was that the volunteers have to stay for the whole meet, not how soon your kids are done if they are 5 and only swim free/back. |
Concession stands need to stop. Families are fat as it is. They don't need to eat at little league games! |
talk to your team reps- that doesn't seem right. We switch everyone but the referee and announcer between back and breast. Those two would stay regardless, so it's no big deal |
go to a division 1, 2, 3 meet and look at the A meet swimmers. Fat is not a word I would use, and that usually goes for the families too |
Which is why they break them into shifts for B Meets. |

I don’t know the inner workings of this - but do have kids that play baseball & swim. I’m now guessing we have concession stands not as a courtesy to spectators but because it’s actually a money maker.
At any rate - both of those teams for us allow you to pay in lieu of volunteering & I think that’s a fair policy. |
| I don’t get the concessions hate, at least for B meets. In our league/division kids and volunteers need to be there by 5, and the meets usually run past 8 when they start at 6. Dinner concessions are a necessity, not “bloat.” |
I can only speak for myself. My kids play another sport with concessions and one wanted to join swim team next year so o was reading all of this. I didn’t want to work fast food jobs in HS and I certainly don’t want to know. Concessions sell junk and that’s fine, but they don’t need it every single game and I don’t want to volunteer my time to keep it going. It’s not hard to get food around here, especially with uber eats. I pay the volunteer fee to get out of it and then tell them I didn’t bring cash when they want the candy, chips and sugary drinks all through every game. |
I am so thankful parents don't need to volunteer for concession at our meets. Those are run by the people who normally staff the snack bar. I do appreciate that they sell real food as we are often rushing from work to swim meets. |
The concessions at the meets I’ve been to this season include hamburgers, big salads, hummus and pita, chicken wraps, water, etc. Reasonable dinner choices at an all evening sporting event. |

I don't love volunteering for concessions so I just find other things to do. I'm an early riser so I typically do set up for home A meets. That job has a set end to it and I get to see my kids swim. My H likes to do clean up because then the kids just stay and swim when the pool opens.
We definitely financially support the concessions though. I am pretty sure my kids swim for the the sugar. They are young enough to think it is special to take their own money and pick out a treat they wouldn't normally have. |
Or, pay for whomever normally runs concessions to work concessions during the swim meet. Swim teams are actually taking money away from concession workers by commandeering the snack bar for several hours--they are taking work hours away from teenagers. |
| Saddest thread ever. |
| Many pools don’t have concessions. Only for swim meets. |
