BASIS DC to open in 2012-2013

Anyone who's periodically popped in and out throughout these 41 pages saw someone repeatedly posting their breathless hysterics, rumor and innuendo, evidently with some personal agenda of trying to spread fear, uncertainty and doubt, as though Basis would be the most horrible school in the city.

And like the more sane folks here have suggested, the rumor poster did so without any providing any facts and without the school even opening yet.

Astounding, 41 pages to accomplish nothing but repeatedly spew rumors. Waste of time and space.

Where? Please quote, if you're going to make such accusations. Because, at this point, you sound sort of paranoid.

If you read back through the 41 pages, you will find it chock full of patently statements about Basis like "there won't be any AA students, they will all be counseled out", "there won't be any special needs students" which then turned into "it will be all special needs students because that's who they specifically cater to" and other wild imaginings of some "serious issue" - lots of statements like this, yet all of which turn out to be completely false and without any merit.

And then there were the repeated personal attacks on Mary Siddall, that she's "mean", that she was "driven out of Basis", that she's "running away" from Basis because "she knows it will fail".

That's just a small sampling of the things poster(s) have repeatedly written - there plenty more like it all throughout the 42 pages. When there's evidence in writing, "paranoia" is no longer a question.

All I am saying is, to the poster(s) who keep trolling with this stuff, knock it off already. I'm not the only one in these threads who has seen through it (it has all the subtlety and finesse of a bull in a china shop) and I'm not the only one here who's lashed out at the constant trolling.

People are sick and tired of it. Nobody buys into it, and no good will ever come of it. Just stop already.

7:28, I agree. You aren't paranoid and I am likewise fed up.

Like many other parents, we were at a crossroads trying to decide where to send our student for middle school. We had been researching over a half dozen schools, trying to narrow in, attending various information sessions, reading articles and reviews, signing up for communications, emailing and calling administrators, and so on. And the more we did, the more we learned and the more we saw that there were posters here deliberately posting misinformation and trying to stir the pot.

In our case, the negativity actually DID do one positive thing, so I will have to disagree there - It led us to redouble our research on BASIS to see if there was any merit to it, but the more we learned, the more we leaned toward BASIS.

sorry, I can't read this thread. It's just too damn long.

07:28: "People are sick and tired of it. Nobody buys into it, and no good will ever come of it. Just stop already."

So why do you keep pushing this back up to the top of the forum? Your post is personalizing things way too much. Move on to new Basis thread.

I'm a 7th grade parent. This is my son's 3rd year, and yes, he's had recess every year, and they may have other outside breaks (during advisory). Yesterday, he jumped out of my car at drop off, so he could join in on his favorite school yard game - foursquare. He's also looking forward to the interscholastic sports each season. We peered at BASIS for a little while, but realized my son is too active and outdoorsy for that type of environment. Latin has a new Web site up with lots of good info: http://www.latinpcs.org

Leadership turnover or loss of founders can sometimes torpedo a startup. BASIS experience in AZ aside, the DC school is still a startup. Bringing in too many leaders who know BASIS, but don't know DC and the competitive school market could be a problem. BASIS as a charter management organization is not like KIPP. Their model has yet to be replicated in an inner-city setting. DC is the guinea pig.

Sigh. Didn't mean to vent so much, but Mary put so much into recruiting, it feels like kind of a letdown to those of us who were sold on BASIS in DC to see her jump into a national role. Yes, just like Michelle Rhee cut and ran to national level. Not that I'm bitter or anything?

Separate question. Why does BASIS think Mary's experience with opening one charter in the EASIEST place to do it would be relevant to expansion into charter-hostile territory in the rest of the country?

Original Tucson parent here. Another insight on BASIS corporation... First, to know BASIS you really need to know Olga Block. She is not an educator. She is a ball-breaker and will say as much to your face. Perhaps on the face of this planet perhaps only Carolyn McGarvey (certainly not Michael) could ever directly confront her and survive. She is BASIS, for better and for worse. She is a dynamo and a creator but not an educator. I don't think she knows how to educate kids but she has built a good model with help from talented educators on the ground. This and lack of public alternatives in Tucson support enrollment at her schools and so she can convince herself that she has a good model and need not respond to criticisms. Now, should she be imprisoned by the demands of teachers and parents? No. Should she perhaps be willing to listen? I'd say yes.

But the other observation I would make about the BASIS corporation in the last 2 years is how much it has changed. Originally the plan was simple... put the best teachers with the kids and impose high standards. Now the plan is to create a standardized "BASIS-in-a-box" model that can by spread nationwide. The focus, I believe, is at this point on profiting on the BASIS "success pheremones." One negative result of this expansion has been (a) the hiring of idiots in positions of central power who mess with the curriculum or structure of the school and then get fired but only after the damage has been done and (b) removing quality educators and on-site administrators (like Mary it seems) to positions within the higher bureaucracy, removed from students and, frankly, reality.

Again, I offer this only as an aside and from distant shores. Ultimately, as one poster said, charters are free enterprises. Parents will choose the least worst alternative, and perhaps in many markets BASIS is it. That is our choice right now (and ultimately we believe a strong family is the single-most important factor in student achievement in any case). But many parents and teachers here in Tucson believe that BASIS could be so much more ("BASIS for humans" is our motto) and we plan to use our purchasing power to encourage our campus to respond to our concerns! (Can you imagine the look on Olga's face if the parents organized a school-wide boycott for a day to take the kids on a field trip???)

Sorry we all believed in BASIS DC but its falling through and revealing it's true colors. I hate to say this and even believe it....yes these people are looking out for one race and it's white. Our blacks students are suffering at this place....and the chubby Head of School looks like he knows what he says but observe him well...he's fake. He's not there for our children. I hate to admit this but it's the truth. It's run like Gestapo force...

Would anyone care to share reflections on the pre-comps?

The "gestapo" is the first person to tell you that your child does not know the material! How dare he! Shouldn't this tell you somehing about the education your child has received up to this point? Why blame the messenger? Blame the school you came from!

I suspect Basis would like nothing better than for every kid to be aces, so they could be proven right about their philosophy that every kid can excel. But look, this school is not going to work for everybody. If your kid listens well and absorbs material by lecture/note taking it's good but some kids learn better with a different approach: for example project-based, inquiry learning, computer-based, etc etc. It is not a slam of your child if their learning style is different than what this school offers.

By the way, irony? complaining about white bias and calling the head chubby.
