That would be a disaster. McAuliffe isn't on the short list. He isn't even on the long list as a black horse. He's on the "anybody but this candidate" list.

If you can't win your battleground state, you aren't a big enough draw to consider turning that battleground state.

+1. Dem who hates him. He wasn’t a popular governor and no one wanted him again in 2021 (VA off year elections. Bless their hearts. Every single year is an election year in VA). He was so dismissive about parents who were upset that schools had been closed 8 months during COVID with not even an idea as to how and when to reopen. Youngkin didn’t win VA. He lost suburban women with kids learning via laptop and thus lost the state. Just brushed them off with snark. VA was gettable by literally any moderate Dem who wasn’t him. There’s a reason he was nicknamed McAwful.

Nova Dems have gone too far left. The school boards were resisting Youngkin's reopening and unmasking orders, just because he was the one doing it. They were going to keep doing it until they realized Dems in the state legislate were not going to back them, particularly one Fairfax state senator(Chip?).

uh, no. Let's not blame the school board. Let's go ahead and call it what it was... Youngkin was fear mongering about CRT and "parents not having a voice in education" so it struck a nerve with the Karens who think little Bryceleigh shouldn't get a B or god forbid be in a classroom where the truth about slavery and systemic race issues are taught. It's much easier for little Bryceleigh to learn about George Washington and the cherry tree so mommy can hear about that while waiting in line at Starbees instead of talking about race, equality, etc.

It's true NOVA Dems have gone too far left. But that could be it's own thread...let's stay on topic.

Signed the NOVA mom not ashamed to say she voted for Youngkin...but also a fan of Warner and Caine if you must know. I don't vote for Dem or Rep, I vote for whose policies are in my best interest.

I agree NOVA Dems have leaned further to the left than I think NOVA's population really is. In the last primary, a lot of our moderate Dems (like Chip) got primaried and lost to more radical candidates that I'm not happy about. But McAuliffe wasn't one of those too-left Dems. He was just a bad candidate with unfortunate ties to the unlikeable Clintons and a tendency to put his foot very far into his mouth. And on policy, I'd much prefer Dems protecting our state's access to women's healthcare (rather than trying to pass abortion bans), focusing on protecting our kids from gun violence in schools (rather than prioritizing guns over lives), and supporting/funding our public schools (rather than funneling money into "school choice").

Side note: on that last issue, I could be open to a conversation about vouchers (there are benefits, such as relieving some over-crowding in public schools), but our education system needs to prioritize public education first.

You.gov polled democrats and independents earlier this month on their top pick for the nomination if Biden were to step down. After Harris, Newsom and Buttigieg tied for second. Pete is more popular than you think.

Newsom? They can't put two Californians on the ticket.

NOVA Mom who voted for Youngkin. Not sure why you made that comment.

DP. What was your reasoning behind voting for Youngkin? My understanding from my neighbors (I'm also a NOVA parent) was that it was a combo of anger at state Dems for slow school reopening + McAuliffe's insanely tone-deaf quote about parent involvement in education. Bonus points to Youngkin for keeping Trump away from his campaign trail. But the NOVA votes for Youngkin (IME) were more about anger at Dems for school stuff than it was positivity about Youngkin. I'm honestly curious what you were voting FOR with Youngkin.

Well -- you should know NOVA (and Richmond area, Norfolk area) has always voted blue and as they are more populated the state of VA has historically always voted Blue. I've voted blue many times too (I like Warner and McCain and voted for them) - with Youngkin he resonated because I thought he would deal better with the pandemic (which honestly is a main reason why McAuliffe lost) and also because at that point IMHO NOVA had indeed gone too far to the left with their agendas - it was time to bring the pendulum back and with Warner and McCain there was still balance because they are Dems.

As you know more recently there was a huge backlash from FCPS when he issued an EO that basically stated parents had the right to be informed if their child wanted to be addressed in school by a different pronoun. FCPS refused to follow this EO. I thankfully did not have children in school by then and so while I supported the EO didn't really care either way. But thought that the EO should have been followed by all school districts. Everyone is allowed to have their opinion on this - agree to disagree.

Obama chose Joe Biden as his running mate for this exact reason.

No, he was planning to pick Tim Kaine to win Virginia, until Putin invaded Georgia.

Still a straight white man

OMG - why is this an issue even?

If President Biden drops out it is VERY likely that Kamala Harris will be at the top of the ticket. Logistically, she'll have the campaign infrastructure and access to the millions of dollars already raised for the Biden-Harris campaign.

Putting this aside, who do you think will be or who do you want as her VP against Donald Trump?

Michelle — waiting for the last possible moment to announce.

What are examples of a tough dilemma/situation that was improved by calling Pete?

Pete is a great communicator. He's got a message and goes out there and delivers it with precision. He doesn't falter on "gotcha" questions and doesn't get distracted from his point. I really like him and I'm sure he deserves to stay in the cabinet, if he's not the VP pick.

He may be a great communicator, but that wasn’t the question.

Not a fan of Kamala but will support her over the orange felon. The GOP really messsed things up by not running another candidate.

Do you mean Senators Warner and Kaine? I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume your phone is autocorrecting Kaine to McCain and its not that you don't know what you're talking about.

As for NOVA making the rest of the state Blue, that's not historically borne out. We had a GOP-majority state legislature until Trump, and voted red in every presidential election from 1952-2004 (except 1964). Our governors have also gone both ways (since 1970 we've had 7 Republicans and 7 Democrats).

I want Pete to resign from DOT and go full-time on the campaign trail, then take a different position in the Harris administration. He’s not the VP pick.

I'd love this. Agree he is not the VP pick.

Yes, thanks for benefit of the doubt! Darn autocorrect (using phone). Kaine is great. My DD met him while doing a lobbying project.

I'd vote for a Dem Governor again.

Cooper over Beshear (KY) could help put NC in play (longshot...I know).

It’s not that long of a shot. Yes Dems have lost NC since Obama left office but usually by razor thin margins.

AZ is probably a better bet. Kelly would be a good fit.
