Can I sue Callie Oettinger?

It certainly seems like one of the documents was some kind of comprehensive or extensive spreadsheet or report of kids with psychiatric histories across all regions and placements.

With an entire admin building full of people, it certainly seems like FCPS could have designated someone to be the point person for this. A contractor at Experian reading off cue cards with no information? Really?

This isn't a credit card data breach. Why tf is FCPS sending us to Experian? What use could that possibly have?

If they know who to contact, they know what information was given away.

Experian isn’t “credit card” per se. They use personal data and habits to set your credit score, but more importantly, they have services in place to protect and restore from identity theft.

I don’t think they do. That’s why this is being sent to experian, because information that can be used in identity theft may be out there. Once it left the building, fcps lost all control.

But that's not what this is, this is medical data and educational records.

How else did they know which families to send the letter to? They must know what documents were given to Oettinger. That's where they pulled the names from to send the letters.

I don’t know we know for sure what’s out there. The fact they hired equifax tells me they aren’t either.

Did anyone get any actual information from the email or phone contact?

Surely you understand the concept of PII?

I’m irate at FCPS. I’m also irate at Callie. If another parent had done this with her child’s data and she got a letter, I wonder how she would be feeling about that parent right now, if they would think she was some sort of whistleblower hero instead of a bad actor.

When FCPS has a data breach, whether Callie gets ahold of it or a giant hacker group (or a hacker group via Callie), I would be mad at the hacker group too.

It’s funny but it’s actually possible to be mad at more than one bad actor. If Callie hadn’t been some random lady in south county, I’d be less mad, sure, because she wouldn’t be relatable.

But she’s a mom just like me. With one or more kids with disabilities, just like me. But I don’t plan to metaphorically burn the school division down on my way out and take 35k other families with it, unlike her.

I wonder how many of you stanning for Callie got letters. It’s bad enough that the FCPS parents for literacy Facebook group is apparently kissing her butt. Maybe because she was expelled from at least one sped Facebook group for breaking the rules.

I’m not happy about it, but the facts are the law is on her side. Once fcps let the data go, it’s out there. I’m super pissed they let this happen. 1 student from 1 school turned into 35000 kids from dozens of schools. This call to action should be to stop fcps from being a sieve with our kids data.

How do we find this out?

We are in a different school pyramid. I have had three kids with IEPs, two for speech and one for serious mental health issues. The dc with the serious problems had info leaked but not the other two. It makes me think there was some incredible sensitive document listing all the kids in MH crisis.

I suppose that is possible (and I'm sorry this happened to you). However, the letter we received is about our child who hasn't had an IEP in ~5 years. Kid was preschool age at the time and was getting physical therapy services, that's it. So I think the leak encompasses a range of services and conditions.

WTH does this even mean.? How would the "know what she took."? Memaw here doesn't seem to understand things.

You don’t get that right. You lost control of the data when you gave it to fcps. See “pentagon papers”.

No, they cannot give out personal info without parental consent. FCPS didn’t have the authorization to share. She has the data without the proper authorization. AND she distributed it.

"proper authorization"? There is no such thing in this case. FCPS handed the data to her.

Go ahead. Hire a lawyer. Spend your money. See where it gets you.
