How is FCPS teacher/staff shortage?

The state would love the excuse to crack down on FCPS if that happened because it's flatly illegal.

And? Do you think FCPS is the only school district that is missing lots of teachers? Do you think FCPS is the only school district that will have 45 students per classroom this fall? Just because FCPS got kicked off the VA Schools Forum doesn't mean that other school districts no longer exist.

I think it would be the door for vouchers and charters getting thrown open. There is no provision in state law for large classrooms if it's too hard to hire.

Vouchers and charters won't conjure up new teachers from thin air. The solution is a waiver. There are waivers for all sorts of things. This isn't a radical idea.

The right and neo-libs don’t care about new teachers or class sizes- they just want to funnel tax money to religious and/or charter schools.

My kids' ES currently has an opening for 2 monitors and nothing else.

Lots of schools were able to poach teachers from other schools early on, so there’s really just a rearranging of the deck chairs…

Not really, the schools with terrible principals or places that teachers just dont want to go will be in trouble. The schools with good principals where teachers want to be will be dine

I dunno about that. There are many highly regarded schools with several vacancies.

Highly regarded by parents has almost no correlation with high regard by staff. Weyanoke ES for example is probably the last place a high-SES family would consider, yet they have excellent employee satisfaction/engagement survey results. It's a wonderful place to work despite being in an underserved community.

Yes, that is true. I think PP is pointing out that it isn’t one demographic or type of school. There are Title 1 and AAP Centers on this list.

This! FCPS is also not listing all jobs...which is odd.

There are still a lot of vacancies listed. Or at least it seems like a lot.

I work for FCPS and would also like to know this. I do agree that staff satisfaction isn’t related to working at a UC/UMC school. Put a terrible principal at a “good” school and watch what happens. BTDT.

So the schools with the most vacancies, its safe to assume have awful admins?
Anonymous
They can’t fit 45 in a classroom. Class sizes will stay as they are, which will be over 30 as the norm in all grade levels. Positions that aren’t filled will have day to day subs. When they aren’t picked up, current school staff will juggle to provide coverage for the day. Coverage, not teaching. More resignations will happen next year because everyone will be more overworked.

You can’t force people to apply to be teachers if they don’t want to. Apply to be a sub if you want to do something to help.

I don’t know how you can make that assumption. The shortages are more acute in certain areas than others and it’s also cheaper to live near some schools than others.

Employee: Have you gone to The Hub and searched for “Working Conditions Survey?”

This is why the county should reassign instructional coaches to classrooms.
