How is FCPS teacher/staff shortage?

Anonymous
Saw a lot of vent post online from FCPS teachers about quitting. How do things look for 2022-2023?

One example: https://www.reddit.com/r/nova/comments/uy0r9c/i_think_fcps_is_going_to_implode/

That reads like a load of BS to me.

Whatever. The economy is tanking. Teachers are already overpaid, especially after the debacle of distance learning.

I haven’t seen this at my school.

Something that has not been widely discussed is that the student population is changing. The number of students in FCPS is falling due to demographics and dissatisfaction with the quality of the education. It only makes sense that teachers are leaving.

LOL - overpaid, that was a funny one.

I work for FCPS, and this seems accurate to me. We have 20+ vacancies at my school for next year.

It’s part of the Great Resignation - teachers are leaving just like everyone else.

We have 3 openings at my school that were never filled for this school year. Only one of those positions even got a long-term sub. The long-term sub was offered the position fulltime and declined.

I know of 6 teachers at my school alone who are done after this year. Not done at this school or done in FCPS, but done with teaching 100%. Only 1 of those 6 leaving is due to retirement. And oh boy has she been offered incentives out the wazoo to stay on for one more year. She turned them down because they are selling and leaving the area to be closer to her daughter in SC.

If we couldn't fill 3 spots this year, how in the hell are they going to fill 9 next year?

I mean, even the student teachers we have are not trickling down into teaching positions. Both who were at my school this year are going into policy after graduating and had jobs lined up. I mean...wtf are we going to do?

This year was bad but next year is going to be an absolute sh!tshow.

OMFG! I can't imagine!

Is this middle or high school?

I posted below about our 3 vacancies this year and potential for 9 next year. I'm at an elementary school.

Wages not keeping up with the area’s cost of living
Wild kids not listening/phones/standards being lowered
Admin that blames you for everything
CRT hysteria and tip lines
Parents blaming you for school closures and calling you lazy
Not a teacher but I can’t see the reason to stay at this rate

Compared to other areas, FCPS is doing well. Some schools with bad administration are seeing some shortages but many aren't.

The OP of the Reddit post has a spouse who works in PAC. Everything they wrote is correct and anyone who works in a similar role can confirm. I don't know about system wide but special ed, especially PAC, EAC, and Cat B are never going to be able to fill all the open positions. All of those jobs should be on a separate, significantly higher pay scale and schools should not be able to pull support staff from those rooms under any circumstances.

I know more teachers leaving the profession than any other year. There are many things that FCPS could fix now to make teaching a better experience. This is my viewpoint as an ES teacher.

Cap class sizes at 25. No class should be more than this.

Raise teacher pay and make sure teachers get steps every year.

Eliminate useless and repetitive PD.

Do less district wide testing that is useless and takes away from class time.

Eliminate excessive admin tasks that are unnecessary .

Actually discipline kids who are disruptive or have behavior problems.

Put more counselors and ESOL teachers in ES.

Get rid of CLTs and let teachers guide their team planning time.

Require All Gatehouse Employees to sub once a month including the superintendent and school board.

Make it easier to become a sub. Pay subs more pay.

Now with all that… taxes need to increase. If only the meals tax passed a few years ago.

They can eliminate half the jobs in gatehouse and most teachers wouldn't even notice a difference m
