The state would love the excuse to crack down on FCPS if that happened because it's flatly illegal.

And? Do you think FCPS is the only school district that is missing lots of teachers? Do you think FCPS is the only school district that will have 45 students per classroom this fall? Just because FCPS got kicked off the VA Schools Forum doesn't mean that other school districts no longer exist.

I think it would be the door for vouchers and charters getting thrown open. There is no provision in state law for large classrooms if it's too hard to hire.

Vouchers and charters won't conjure up new teachers from thin air. The solution is a waiver. There are waivers for all sorts of things. This isn't a radical idea.

This is a statewide (and nationwide) problem. In Richmond, for example:

"Richmond Public Schools are facing a critical teacher shortage six weeks before the start of the school year.

"According to the RPS School Board, 552 out of 2,156 teachers resigned from the district at the end of the 2021-2022 school year. Currently, the district is still facing 176 vacancies."

Hopefully the waiver request isnt granted. I doubt the state board signs off on classes that big

So ... what do you hope will happen this fall? In FCPS and other school districts with shortages? I've seen that MCPS is forcing teacher transfers to understaffed schools. But when there aren't enough teachers in the entire district, that won't fix the problem.

The state board of education that wants an excuse to force vouchers and charters on districts who don't want them gets its excuse.

I mean, sure, they're going to do that anyway. That's Youngkin's stated plan.

But vouchers and charter schools will not open overnight or create more teachers. And FCPS isn't the worst positioned school district in Virginia for teacher shortages. Not even close.

The class size will definitely be the max at some schools. 30-35 in some classes.

Vouchers aren’t going to solve the problem now. And I know at least one catholic school is also in desperate need for teachers so it’s not just public schools.

The number of teaching openings at charters and catholic schools are stunning.

They won’t do that, as it’s illegal, just find a warm body to sit there with them.

+1, it’s not like privates and charters have hundreds of student openings waiting for us to sign-up.

This is how one other state is handling it's teacher shortage:

https://www.wsmv.com/2022/07/21/wilson-county-high-school-wont-offer-physics-course-due-teacher-shortage/

They are not offering physics AT ALL because they have no applicants and no one to teach it. So they canceled it completely. Expect to see more of this more places.

Which ones are better or worse, and how do you know?
