I know that re zoning is expected in 2019 in S. Arlington due to the new elementary school. Does anyone know that if you kid goes to one of the schools effected will they be moved to another elementary school that year or would the re-zoning only impact incoming students or students that voluntarily move?
Sorry if this has been asked before. |
| It will have to be everyone as of 2019 (not incoming students like the HS boundary change). So kids will move elementary schools. |
| OP here. Thank you! |
| Generally unless they will be rising 5th graders and then can finish out at the school they've been at |
Hi, Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I am.new to this board because we may be moving to the area. Where will the new school be? Which elementary schools are likely to be effected? I would hate to have us move into a new house/school only to make my poor kids move again 2 years later! |
The new school will be near Thomas Jefferson middle school. They will move Patrick henry to that spot and make Patrick henry a dedicated Montessori school. No one REALLY knows what is going to happen after, but the areas current zoned for Drew, Hoffman Boston, and Oakridge will likely be the most effected. |

I'm fascinated to see how this plays out.

Why is that? |
It got nasty in north Arlington and those are all well rated schools. I can't imagine what happens when people get shifted from a GS 10 blue ribbon school to a 3 school. |
The wealthiest people in SA (SFH in Oakridge and Arlington Heights) are likely to get even less diverse schools with higher test scores that only further lift their property values. They are the most likely people to make a stink and have the board cower, but they are sitting pretty. The people getting the screw, the SB doesn't give 2 Fs about them. Not enough of them, not enough money. |
Additional re-districting will happen again in another few years; so it's really not so simple to give you an answer that guarantees you won't be impacted the next time around even if you avoid it this time. Unless you move really close (like spitting distance) to a neighborhood school that is guaranteed not to be switched to an option school in upcoming years, there's still a chance you'll be impacted by new boundaries. Fleet opens at Thomas Jefferson site next year. Reed will open in Westover in another few years. Some option programs might get relocated, which affects neighborhood schools. |
+1 Buy the house you like and don't worry too much about the schools. If your kids do have to move, they won't be the only ones. If it's that important to you that they never get redistricted then you should rent so you can easily switch homes to stay in the school zone you want. |
Lol, don't worry about the schools. "All schools are good schools"? |
or get into an option program. Location might move; but your kids will follow the program with their classmates. |
Seriously question the PP who says just buy the house you love. APS is a wreck. The S Arlington ES redistricting is one of many, many series of redistricting. The redistricting is ongoing because the county (APS) has not done what needs to to be done: resolve current and projected catastrophic overcrowding by designating a fourth comprehensive HS. In the meanwhile, they will spend a lot of money and time moving kids around and shuffling things around. Before laying down any roots in this very poorly planned community, I'd explore larger school districts (Fairfax and Montogmery) seriously. |
