Mix cupcakes are really good.

We had Christmas at our home on Christmas Day, then came to the in laws who won’t let my kids open their presents bc we had to wait days for our other family to arrive. Well, the other family arrived yesterday, but my in laws are again trying to delay the kids opening up their gifts until tomorrow- which is when we are going to MY parents home. Annoyed is an understatement. This happened years ago too and when it was time to leave to my family’s home my daughter lost her cool bc she just wanted to open her presents. I looked like the bad guy for trying to stick to the schedule to get my family back to my parents house for that celebration. I mean we’ve been here for days with my kids just staring at their presents (which is stupid bc most are from dollar tree anyway). It’s why we only do this circus like once every 4 years now. So sick do this manipulation.

Eww no. So sweet, with a weird slightly rancid aftertaste. No thanks.

So petty:

We brought trays of catered food to my brother/ SIL house on Xmas day. SIL took charge of reheating.

We all sat in the living room chatting, etc while she checked on the food occasionally.

When the food was ready, she made 2 heaping plates of food and called out to her 2 sons (HS and college) to come to eat. She didn't say anything to the rest of us.

By the time we got into the kitchen the 2 boys were shoveling food into their mouths (did not wait for us to even make a plate).

I was last in line (made sure my 84 yo mom was fed, etc) and barely scraped up bits from each platter because the first 2 were served such huge portions (there were extra trays of food but they hadn't been heated due to oven space limitations).

Family is so fascinating. But I'm glad we only do this once every year or two.

That’s not petty at all! They had the gifts out under the tree for days and when the other family finally arrived - and your kid had been waiting patiently- they said actually just kidding let’s wait another day? I’d have overruled that nonsense and let them open their presents. That’s so mean.

We had a pretty good visit with my dad, but later that evening he called me to complain that my 17 year old son still has not read the book about Hungarian history that my dad bought him three years ago and that it hurts his feelings. He wanted my son to read the book and give a report on it. My dad told me that we are pushing away anything having to do with Hungary and this is painful to him.

For context, my dad is a very right-wing conservative Hungarian nationalist who likes Viktor Orban and the "Our Homeland" movement which is even more right-wing than Orban is. He is also racist and anti-Semitic and doesn't hide it. It's impossible to discuss current events with him because he starts screaming and no one can get a word in edgewise. He is convinced that Hungary is the greatest nation in the world and there is a worldwide Jewish conspiracy against Hungarians. Think Gus Portokalos from My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but a million times worse.

The shower that we use at my parents’ house has horrible water pressure and I HATE it. I have to stand under this thing and the water just sort of trickles lightly down my back, and it isn’t even enough to cover my whole body, so it is freezing in there. All I want to do is get in and out as fast as possible, but it takes 10 minutes to rinse the shampoo and conditioner out because the water pressure is so bad.

Speaking of shampoo and conditioner, we had to go out and buy some the second day we were here because there was none in the bathroom. It never occurred to me that we would have to pack that. Who doesn’t stock their shower with shampoo and conditioner?

Well girl, sounds like you are just too cool for school. Nobody can please you but yourself. Stick with that.

This isn’t petty. It’s fascinating. Granted I’m on your side and don’t think you should force your son to read what sounds like Nazi or Soviet Communist propaganda. However, there must be a reason your dad is the way he is. Assuming he was raised behind the Iron Curtain and faced the hardships that came along with that, it’s curious he’s still supporting it.

Anyway, still on your side PP. I’m sure my questions would turn him into a loon for an hour but what an interesting petty complaint for this thread!

Oh come off it. You don’t know me. I actually bake quite well and don’t use mixes. But it sounds like your mom was trying and you are an AH brat.

I get it but if she has an older septic system that might be all she can use.

She doesn’t! The in-laws live in a not-old house with normal plumbing fixtures/pipes on a normal municipal sewer system. For some reason she just really likes Scott.

It defies logic. He was raised in Soviet-occupied Hungary. He was a student during the 1956 revolution. He tried to escape the country a couple of times and was caught each time, but then he finally succeeded and came to the US in the late 1960s. He hates communism and socialism. He’s a Trump supporter and he is against providing any aid to Ukraine. He likes Putin! He differentiates between the Soviet communists of the Cold War era and the current Russian leadership. Evidently the Soviet communists were mostly Jews but Putin and his people are not and that makes all the difference! He will forever be angry about Hungary’s loss of territory after WWI and swears that Hungary will get those lands back someday. He is a walking grievance machine. It’s no wonder his grandkids don’t really enjoy spending time with him!

“Yeah, you think that’s painful, Dad? Imagine having a parent that’s racist and anti-Semitic. It’s the worst.” 😒

Wow. It must have been a challenge, and also quite strange and wonderful, to be raised by someone like that. It certainly sounds like he's taken the whole MAGA, Trumpian philosophy to a whole different level. Not to get political on the petty complaints page, there is no reason for anyone who escaped Soviet Communism to love Putin and his cronies at this point. Same dress, different dance. I'm glad you all had a reasonably good holiday together. Your son is a beneficiary of some wonderful history, regardless of your dad's current political opinions.
