As a parent, I totally agree with this. Could they not just put those observational notes wherever they plan on filing this meaningless survey? Of course they want to quantify everything, which is why it's a bubble form. Unfortunately something is lost when you turn people into stats. At least teachers will hopefully still pay attention to kids and do the awesome work they always do. |

Is there a connection to this and the Boarddocs for Friday's retreat on "Equity?"
Some of those competencies and educational equity seem to be at odds with each other. And, what is my "culture" if I don't have recent immigrants in my background? What's the culture of an Asian adoptee with white parents? Sad that we must judge people by the color of their skin. |

Do your own research through FOIA requests, but Fox is reporting those SEL surveys cost millions of dollars through a company owned by Zuckenberg.
FCPS Aused our covid relief funds on it, and also millions of dollars on Critical Race Theory, now referred to as Culturally Responsive Teaching to hid the curriculum from parents.. Those funds should have been used on math and language remediation, special ed services, and other academic subjects, NOT years of expensive SEL surveys and divisive CRT. |
No kidding. This is a crime of epic proportions. I suspect someone (or someones) are making money under the table. |
| True fact : 99.9% of FCPS employees are idiots. |
I've posted this before: someone needs to do a deep dive into all FCPS contracts. Computers, etc. I learned as a young teacher that textbook selection has much money crossing palms--it may not be in the form of cash. (This was not in FCPS--but, I doubt textbook companies limit it to one school system.) Even the free lunches, the free feminine supplies, etc. All of these do not appear out of nowhere. People need to check. Ask questions. |

This survey should have been tailored to different age groups, to be more helpful. I feel that my 6th grader would absolutely be able to provide thoughtful responses, whereas she would not have been able to, two years ago.
Her Home Room teacher was saying she's hearing a lot of negative self talk starting already (and is fairly prevalent among middle schoolers), and this is one tool they're hoping to use to help the kids address those issues before they blow up into bigger problems. |
Waay more than this, they paid almost 2 million for it, here's the pricing breakdown: https://defendinged.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Copy-of-Copy-of-Copy-of-Copy-of-Post-It.png |
There used to be a theory of thought that suicide was contagious--that the more it was discussed or pointed out, the worse it became. There is some substance to this theory. If you have kids keep analyzing themselves to see if there is something "wrong with me" they may begin to believe it. Just sayin' |
Here's another: https://www.foxnews.com/us/fairfax-20-million-equity-social-emotional Here's a thought: if SB wants to promote "equity" perhaps they should spend the money on teachers, instructional assistants, and social workers to help marginalized kids. That will produce more "equity" than free lunches for all (poor kids already get them) and expensive questionnaires which are counterproductive. |
Mine either. He won't really even understand most of the questions. |
| I think some of the thoughts behind mental health evaluations and questionnaires, such as a state level requirement, has good intentions, but should be done through pediatricians and primary care doctors. They are far better equipped to secure and evaluate a student's medical information than the school is. Additionally the questions about the school specific environment, such as a student's feelings on whether the school is a safe space to discuss racial issues should be done via an anonymous survey. Some students may not feel comfortable answering it honestly if their answer is no but they're old enough to understand the school expects them to say "yes everything is great here". |
No doubt. They just pay lip service to equity, though, while they keep money circulating among their cronies. |
So much fake news in this post. Al ESSER spending was explained publicly. No need for FOIA. Zuckerberg does not own the company — such anweird need to find a boogeyman. And cultural responsiveness is not CRT. |
DP. I started complaining about them spending ESSR money on this when it was first explained publicly. They were planning on doing it anyway. Instead of using ESSR money to tutor kids, they re-routed a lot of it to do things they would have otherwise done. This was one of those things. It might be the most controversial of those things. Also since CRT is a floating signifier on both sides of the strange debate about it, why can't CRT be culturally responsive teaching? It's whatever the person talking wants it to mean. It's meaningless. But most people who don't like it basically are objecting to the idea that someone might teach that white people are inherently oppressors or inherently bad. |
