Gun shots on 14th street tonight!

And on the hands of every American who benefits from tax, transportation, housing, education, and health care policies (among many others) that are designed to pen poor people into specific areas of the country and maintain a multi-generational cycle of poverty.

If they didn't have easy access to guns, there would be fewer deaths and no innocent bystanders.

Poor people are everywhere in this country. Open your eyes.

To be very clear: crime is not happening because of gentrification. There is substantially less crime in the now gentrified DC than there was in the pre-gentrification.

Nice excuse. This is the predictable consequence of last summer’s rioting and anti-police/pro-criminal measures adopted by the DC city government. Did you know that there are actually studies that have demonstrated that anti-police protests are often followed by an increase in crime?

Here’s an example:

This would be true if increases in crime were confined to areas that saw rioting and anti-police protests. They are not.

LOL. There were protests all over the country. Name a city where they didn't happen.

You're too narrowly focused on urban areas and gun crimes.

Do tell about the non-urban areas. I’m sure you’re a real expert on rural communities.

I see strong parallels between gentrifiers and climate change deniers. You think that you can muscle through any ill effects of your actions. Turns out- you are both wrong.
So keep pricing people out of the city… and see how that plays out for you.

Gentrification is not responsible for this. Do you just not grasp that all of Logan Circle was much more dangerous before it got gentrified?

NIMBYs are responsible for the lack of housing, not gentrifyers (who generally make things safer anyway).

Gentrification is literally taking AWAY backyards. DC is for millionaires & homeless folks. That’s it. You can put your ‘hate has no home here’ yard sign up- but that’s not really a thing. I’m not saying another deserves to be shot. This entire situation is tragic. But I am saying the folks who are squeezed out if their communities, can’t afford/wouldn’t even be allowed in those 14th street restaurants, have no pathway out of the cycle of poverty are going to communicate in some other way.
And yes the ‘lock them up’ is NIMBY

Squeezed out of “their” communities? Do they have a divine right to the community? Or, like myself, if I can’t afford a certain place should I move, rather than left steam by things like this? It seems like you’re condoning violence.

The richest part is that the guy who is claiming people are being squeezed out of “their” communities would instantly turn around and call someone a bigot for have concerns about the community impact of mass illegal immigration.

Right? It’s like this smug brand of self-flagellating performative wokeness. I guarantee that poster lives in a place that was once “gentrified” away from some previous less well to do inhabitant. Maybe they made the place better. Maybe they quelled violence by moving in. Noting is preserved in amber. Things change. They always do, or we’d be ruled by the Assyrians right now, because they were the first legit community in existence. Or was it the Mesopotamians. Who knows? Things change.

The Republicans have to move on the gun debate. But at the end of the day, the most important factor by far in explaining disparities in all manner of life outcomes (poverty, unemployment, crime, education) is whether you were born out-of-wedlock. And we all know the statistics are not pretty. Until the Democrats are willing to have a conversation about this, the gunfire will continue.

Agree. There is a obvious correlation between high out-of-wedlock birthrates and poverty, and in turn crime. Until Democrats are willing to acknowledge that, instead of pointing fingers at "Republicans," things will never get better.

And the blood isn't on the hands of every Republican in this country. Your hate is showing. The blood is on the hands of the lowlife(s) who did the shooting. (And before you come out with the racist accusation, I have no clue as to whether the shooter(s) were black or white.)

Yes. In segregated areas across the country. Open yours.

There’s no winning. It’s racist to move in and “gentrify” a place, it’s racist if you do move in and somehow the imagined “perfect balance” of racial groups is disrupted in the area.

It’s also racist to live in a rich area with less diversity. What’s the answer?

Urban crime receives more attention due to that major news agencies are located in the urban area. Does white poor people shot at each other? You dont see or hear it because no journalists live or have any connection to where white on white shooting happens.

There are a lot fewer white people shooting white people. That’s why you hear less about it. Go ahead and look up the statistics if you don’t believe me.

It always seemed safe. I was never afraid. After the last few weeks I don’t feel safe anymore. A date night in the city isn’t worth it. As lame as this sounds I’d rather eat at a stupid restaurant in Bethesda and live.

This is totally illogical.

Read the statistics on poor whites in Appalachia and other predominantly white places. What do the statistics on violence reflect?

I’m not kidding. I honestly don’t know the answer to this question are they worse? They could be. This country is just too violent.
