Ha! Zero chance MCPS sticks with "tracking" if VA gets rid of it. People would need to move to Howard or Frederick to escape it.
No, this will be great business for any private schools willing to open in the next few years (given that current ones are all full).

This needs to become an issue in the VA governor's race. My guess is the people opposed to this are much more likely to vote based on this than the people who would support it.

Tell your Democratic candidates, then. The GOP ones area already out there as being opposed to it (or at least some of them are) and many people on DCUM have said they can't bring themselves to vote GOP over just education issues.

None of the Ds have said anything of substance about education, actually. McAuliffe has some nice sounding words.

Webinar where they clearly say NO more different math classes - everyone gets the same until 11th. And “in class differentiation” to “go deeper” will be provided to kids who get it quickly and need more.

I’m a math teacher. It’s B.S. We really can’t do this.

To be “equitable”

We know.
The fact that VA DOE even says this discredits anything else they say for me.

“ many people on DCUM have said they can't bring themselves to vote GOP over just education issues. ”

I said that here in the past month or so re: Covid.
But this has me reconsidering. I could not vote for a “Trump republican” over this still. I loathe him and his acolytes way too much. But if a half way sane R candidate was saying he would dump this and the Ds say they will keep it moving forward - yeah I would sadly vote R over it. It is THAT terrible of an idea.

Wow. So thankful my kids are in HS (one in Calc BC, the other in pre-calc now) and won't be impacted by this BS. Better start saving for grandchildren's private schools.

Having looked through the GOP field as a former R (left due to Trump), I'm not sure there is anyone most Ds would vote for. There's non-Trump types, but they are still pretty conservative.

The decent private schools are not known for math tracking either.

If you already have whittled the spectrum of kids down through the admissions process though then tracking is less needed. Public is different.

If you want equity, don't apply it selectively to academics.

Can you imagine the outrage? Just a case of picking on the math geeks.

honestly, this has some truth to it. just show me one person that is involved with or supports this decision that also took higher level math classes in high school or college. meanwhile, everyone who actually did so are too busy contributing to society to pay attention to this BS.

Basically, for math to be “equitable” expectations will be lowered and everyone will have to learn at the rate of the lowest students.

This is a terrible policy.

And devastating for smart poor kids.

Don't worry, can you imagine Maryland letting Virginia move ahead in the woke competition? MoCo will probably even try to adopt it before VA gets a chance.

and although they push back against parents, they do track in math, at least starting in middle school.

My husband and I were just discussing how on earth they could ask teachers to do this in classes with 30 kids and no textbook/workbook curriculum. It’s entirely unreasonable. (I have a struggles-to-be-at-grade-level and an advanced math student, and this same-for-all model will be awful for both of them.
