Rescue by media—school opening

I do care about the education gap & some people say in person school isn’t the answer because minority communities are selecting distance learning. I have a fair amount of education / teaching experience so I’m not just spewing crap here. Now I’m already sending my kindergarten to private this year because I can’t supervise DL while working & I wish everyone & not just those who could afford it had that in person option. I’m probably going to send all 3 of my kids to private next year because I want 5 days a week of school while I work. I think we need to make those options available to anyone who wants it & not just those who can afford it. It does not help community unity or help to make DL better or level the playing field to keep so many families in full time DL who want in person education.

What I think could help the situation for 2021-2022 is to create a centralized DL divorced from the base school. Then knock yourself out hiring THE BEST DL teachers on a temporary basis to staff those classes. Have this centralized area really focus on how to do the best DL as possible & take best practices from what worked this school year & from virtual Va. But also give those who want in person the option. I think we will still continue to have problems if we mix those who want DL & those who want in person and I think it’s too difficult to do a good DL at the base school level - not enough resources until you centralize it. Will this work - I say yes. Look no further than Peloton. They have the best instructors & it doesn’t matter where you are to take them.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Sounds good to me.

Yes.

No. If schools are closed, then children need something else. People need people.

Look at the suicide rates in 2020 among children. Isolation is not the solution.

...and if we OPEN the schools, then the mitigation measures the districts set in place will be used for the vast majority of the time kids are together. There will be less need for the other socialization.

This is an excellent idea because it also meets the needs of kids who have in fact flourished with DL. There are some of those, particularly in older grades.

Depends on what you mean by "flourish."

Anonymous wrote:Here’s what the WaPo should cover: Brabrand has botched reopening so badly, starting with the initial hybrid plan he couldn’t pull off and going downhill from there. And yet he gets his contract renewed, with a raise ina year teachers are frozen. How does that happen. He can’t open one of the wealthiest districts in the nation when rates are low, and he gets renewed with a raise.

I’d read that piece, because I still don’t get it.

So a one-sided article? Shouldn’t the Post gather all the facts and then report in a neutral fashion? Or are you taking a two column opinion piece?

Yeah. Not on board with being a barefoot/pregnant/home schooler. I know you don't like hearing from us, but we're not shutting up until schools reopen for our children.

Here is one - my neighbor, teen with Asperger's or on the spectrum, spent his days in high school being bullied and miserable. He loves DL, grades improved, depression alleviated, developed new academic interests in spare time.

HS kids who hate DL typically miss the socialization that comes with school - but once the vaccine is here next year and those kids can see friends, do activities - I bet there is a percentage of teenagers who would pick the sleep, more time for after school job.

DP. Your comment was extremely misogynistic. We're in a recession that is largely impacting women's income and long-term financial well-being. You can call it whining all you want. But if we don't reopen schools, not only will our children's education continue to be sub-par but us "ladies" will continue to fall further behind men in terms of the income gap.

I fully support getting more vocal.

C’mon! We need to keep the pressure up. Whether you like OpenFCPS or not, or want to create your own #FCPSOpen, do something. Call your local education desks! Now is the time!!
