in APS, there was zero instruction March - June 2020. Our kids missed the entire last quarter of the previous grade, on top of the mess with this school year. They deserve better. |
Sure, but there's no effective pressure on APS to do better. At the same time, wealthy parents will assure you that things are just great with DL because they have been trained to never speak badly about their choices. |
Where are you planning on finding enough teachers? I don't know of a single school that isn't short core teachers as it is. There is no way that this crazy plan would work. It is better to remain calm and stable than go haring off on some crazy initiative that is doomed to fail. |
GMAFB. The rates in Arlington are lower than many places with real school happening. And they were insanely low this fall. |
Ok hear me out on another proposed media story, people.
I do care about the education gap & some people say in person school isn’t the answer because minority communities are selecting distance learning. I have a fair amount of education / teaching experience so I’m not just spewing crap here. Now I’m already sending my kindergarten to private this year because I can’t supervise DL while working & I wish everyone & not just those who could afford it had that in person option. I’m probably going to send all 3 of my kids to private next year because I want 5 days a week of school while I work. I think we need to make those options available to anyone who wants it & not just those who can afford it. It does not help community unity or help to make DL better or level the playing field to keep so many families in full time DL who want in person education. What I think could help the situation for 2021-2022 is to create a centralized DL divorced from the base school. Then knock yourself out hiring THE BEST DL teachers on a temporary basis to staff those classes. Have this centralized area really focus on how to do the best DL as possible & take best practices from what worked this school year & from virtual Va. But also give those who want in person the option. I think we will still continue to have problems if we mix those who want DL & those who want in person and I think it’s too difficult to do a good DL at the base school level - not enough resources until you centralize it. Will this work - I say yes. Look no further than Peloton. They have the best instructors & it doesn’t matter where you are to take them. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. |
And Arlington dropped the ball. Again. |
I'd ask for a refund. |
Lol, ok share your proposed solution. I’m happy to hear. |
Your plan overlooks the critical elements of teachers unions and collective bargaining. |
I think they are vaccinated by then and would prefer not to teach concurrent if possible. |
Yes. |
Ugh. It’s the wealthy parents throwing tantrums via APE about closure. They are the ones screaming about their kids’ boredom and missing their friends. |
I was an early adopter of masks even before they were even required, I haven’t been in someone else’s house since March, we haven’t traveled, etc. but now I will put DD in sports for her own mental health. She is isolated and depressed. If there are no plans to open schools fully this Fall, we will move out of the area. |
If you were to give parents a choice again now, TRUST ME, most of them would choose to go back to school. Especially if faced with a virtual school year (or hybrid) for 2021-2022. |
I think this is a great idea. Separating DL and In-person would solve a lot of the animosity from parents that want DL but still complaining about mitigations never being good enough for in-person. |
