Omg, it’s not that far. It’s a nice planned community right up Toll Road, built from green field so no apartments or pockets of lower income, so it’s called Cashburn by locals.

If you want wide open spaces but still hit DC for occasional meeting, it’s the bees knees

Yuck to toll road

Yuck to rich white yuppies

Rich white yuppies live in DC dude. Ashburn is suburban.

Ashburn is exurban. Definitely not rich white yuppies.

white yuppies that pretend to have money joining semi private clubs and happy hours on their street while yelling at their kids, austin, dallas, cole, paige, and ford.

In Ashburn? No, the kids are named Puja and Ganesh

Ashburn is HUGE now and spans from the Potomac River in the north to route 50 in the south. It can take almost a half a hour to traverse. Some neighborhoods are lily white, some are mostly south Asian. If you really want a good look at demographics check out the high schools.

I live in Ashburn and there are so many posts on the neighborhood FB page like this: "Is anyone selling their house soon b/c my friends/relatives are moving here budget is $800-1M and they can't find anything thanks."

Gien that upper MoCo and even Frederick, Urbana, and most of MD are also going nuts, this is not a surprise.

Yes, the prices are what surprise me. We bought just outside the Beltway 6 years ago for $750k. I was really surprised that Ashburn was almost as expensive then.

Way to go OP, the head Ashburn cheerleader !

This. We live in NW DC and are looking at Loudoun County. DCPS has been closed too long with still no plans to fully reopen.

And then we are going to vote Uber liberal and not understand that DCPS is closed that long because of the policies we voted for

In both spots, the neighborhoods have been fairly diverse, with a mix of White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, and south Asian (Indian/Pakistani) families living on our street. Lots of trails and open space, which has been especially nice during the pandemic. Almost all of the communities have pools and playgrounds. Tons of soccer fields and indoor sports areas for both kids and adult sports leagues. Great grocery stores and a decent, though not fabulous, mix of non-chain restaurants.

Traffic within Ashburn itself is fine, though it definitely is a long commute to DC, if you drive. Many people (myself included) telework several days per week, even before the pandemic. Many others take the commuter bus, and are planning to take the metro when it opens.

I live in Ashburn and all my friends work in the tech sector and exactly zero commute to DC. My DH and I are in IT sales to the government. We work exclusively from home. He visits his customer is Chantilly and my customer is actually spread out between Oklahoma, Denver, Leesburg, and Miami. 20% of my job requires a plane ride and 80% is over the phone.

It's amusing how ignorant people are and don't realize their are thousands and thousands of high paying jobs all.between Tysons and Ashburn.

Maybe because we are in IT sales and all our friends are in tech, but I just don't know anyone who commutes into DC.

I'm sooo grateful we have jobs that allow us to live here

In regards to the housing.maekrt it was been great. We've napped up a bunch of townhouse rentals in Ashburn Fram and Village and those are doing very well and I'm enjoying watching the appreciation.

This Ashburn house just sold 75k over list price. Bidding war. And it backs to highway. Totally normal for Ashburn right now.

I live around the corner and have had multiple unsolicited offers. I've considered selling and upgrading and moving over to The Village on Waxpool, but I'd be in the same boat as the thousands of people moving out here fleeing the cities fighting over limited supply.

How so I know they are fleeing? I have a half dozen rentals in Ashburn and everything that has turned over in 2020 has been people coming from DC and (oddly) close in MD.

What's happening in Ashburn isn't unique. It's happening all across NoVa.

However, once the pandemic comes to an end, exurban places like Ashburn will be the first to cool off.

It was out of control before the pandemic. Hasn't cooled off for over a decade. All the high paying jobs and good schools are the fuel for this explosion. Many in ashburn are highly educated tech workers (not the typical mediocre beaurecrat) and want good schools and a short commute. That's the demographic.

Yes, but once the pandemic subsides you won't be seeing the flocks of families looking to relocate out there - families that don't have a "short commute."

I can understand the frustration with certain public school districts, and the immediate desire to relocate to a place where the schools haven't closed...

but...

...COVID-19 isn't going to last forever. Every school around here will reopen for in-person learning. Life will return to some semblance of normalcy. When that happens, I wouldn't want to find myself in a builders-grade vinyl box that I significantly overpaid for sitting 40+ miles away from D.C.
