Year around schools VA

My biggest complaint with school year calendars are them not aligning across the country. We have family and friends in different areas of the country, and it would be really frustrating to not ever be able to have our vacation times line up to be able to visit them while both sets of kids are out of school

This cracks me up. All year people have been screaming that we need to prioritize schoosl over bars and stores. Now it's the pool is more important than school.

It's NoVA priorities change depending on the season.

I’m not screaming about closing bars, but I wouldn’t put bars and pools in the same category regarding the pandemic.

Keep saying that and maybe it will become true!

It sounds bad because it is bad and people that try it don’t love it or we’d have more of it right now. The only way people will accept it is if it’s forced upon us. Fcps is already losing lots of students, so forcing year round school would be a very bad idea. Students, teachers and staff would leave, and their reputation would fall even more than it already has.

I do think whenever kids return to school in person they should offer optional in person summer school to catch kids up.
Don’t tell me all kids are behind so who cares - mine aren’t & there was already an education gap before this that is now widening. I have two in AAP and one in private K. I wish all who wanted it & not just those who can afford it could have the option for in person school right now.

Staffing might be an issue. It would have to be a separate contract.

I think teachers would sign up for it, especially those who take 2nd jobs as servers/retail/whatever over the summer or those who’s kids are older and can stay home alone and are looking to pick up some extra $$. My SIL and BIL are teachers in another state, and over summers my BIL does security for events/concerts and my SIL works at Olive Garden. I know they’d jump at this kind of opportunity, but of course the job market in general is a lot worse where they live so that’s the kind of 2nd jobs that are available, really not great stuff.

Some would. Personally I don’t see how on earth I would because the burn out is real and we have 5 months to go but the young childless ones without a spouse making a second income likely will for the money.

Seriously! I am LMAO. Parents have been yelling at teachers for months to “get back to work” even though we’ve been working every single day as always yet now it’s like “we might try year round school” and suddenly nothing matters more than the pool and swim team.

I thought kids needed in person school . More than literally anything on this planet.

Yes from Sept to June

I grew up with year round school and I think it’s fantastic. Kids and teachers need real breaks and it’s great to travel during different times of the year. Summer break was still 6 weeks.

They get breaks at thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break. Summer needs to be longer than 6 weeks. There shouldn’t be any school at all in July and august. It’d be nice if they could get out in early to mid June too.

I have always thought 6 week summers and 2-3 week breaks between quarters was the way to go.

How so?

You can do different tracks do that only 2/3 of the school is in session at any given time.
