Year around schools VA

Dude, there aren’t 53 weeks in a year. But you’re right that I don’t know what year ‘round means. I thought it meant more weeks of instruction, including some summer weeks, with two three week breaks in May or June and in August. That’s how my friend’s year round school is in Ohio. But hers is actually more weeks of school. It’s a pilot.

It doesn’t really other than it will prevent summer slide. No, it’s not more days of school. It’s the same 180 days spread out differently. The only way to get more school would be if they opened up summer school to any who wanted it vs just those who failed .

There are 52.14 weeks a year. You are picking the wrong fight, especially as you admit you don’t even know what year round school really means. It does not mean every weekday the whole year.

This is not to build in more time to catch up or deliver mediation, this is just a full year schedule so the breaks would be built into other times of the year.

No--this is specifically to catch up. That's exactly what all the press on this is saying.

Governor Ralph North announced Wednesday the possibility of year-round school to help offset the loss of learning because of the pandemic.

I do think it is critical to provide additional instruction to our students next year, and a year-round schedule is one way to approach that. (Richmond Superintendent)

The direct quote from Northam:

“Our children have suffered from COVID-19, as has our families,” Northam said. “One of the things we are entertaining is perhaps year-round schooling for the next year. Perhaps adding increased days this summer. To really help our kids get caught up.”

I’d love it. It would help alleviate overcrowding in Arlington too. I’m a teacher and think I’d experience less burnout.

FCPS is more likely to delay the start of the next school year than to add any school in tbe summer. They aren't even using the FIVE weekdays they have right now. If they eant to add time, start having school on Mondays.

Year round school is a thing that sounds bad but in my experience most people who actually try it love it (teachers and families) the problem is that district often give an opt out so not enough people actually give it a shot.

I agree I think the days will be spread out differently but still
180 days

I hope you’re not a teacher. I never suggested it means every weekday for the whole year.

You’re not reading closely enough. The “additional instruction” would come from the other consideration of adding increased days this summer. Summer school.

Year round schooling itself is not additional instruction. It’s the same days spread differently designed to prevent summer slide and increase learning momentum and info retention

Agree. If you read the press on it, it’s different from the 180 days spread out that folks on this thread are talking about. And it’s temporary, for one school year. (At this point anyway.)

There are still bound to be several three week long breaks and such.

So three weeks off at spring break, summer and Christmas? No thanks. It’s the same thing. I’d rather be off when it’s warm out.

This. And the parents saying it’s the same for childcare must have really young kids. Wait and see what camp options you have available in the cold months compared to summer for your older kids. This plan won’t happen.

The breaks are usually at the end of the quarter. We don’t have vacation when it’s warm, we start in late June when it’s already hot and disgustingly humid.

FCPS had a few school pyramids that were year-round until about 10 years ago. The general public hated it and people actively pupil placed out of those schools.
