Year around schools VA

It’s more like 2 weeks between quarters and a 5-6 week summer. I support it. Kids get to refresh between quarters and we wouldn’t waste September reinstituting norms and whatnot to get them used to school again. And honestly we know we are all bored and antsy those last couple weeks of summer. It’s too long.

What? No we're not. We travel all summer. No boredom.

There are still bound to be several three week long breaks and such.

So three weeks off at spring break, summer and Christmas? No thanks. It’s the same thing. I’d rather be off when it’s warm out.

This. And the parents saying it’s the same for childcare must have really young kids. Wait and see what camp options you have available in the cold months compared to summer for your older kids. This plan won’t happen.

Businesses adapt, just like they are doing now.

As soon as the announcement was made, the tourism industry in Virginia came back and said do not let this happen. They NEED the summer months especially to recoup from last year. They've already reached out to the governor and the Virginia Department of Education asking them to please not do it.

There will be swim clubs that close. They won’t be able to survive financially. I know that may sounds petty pr privileged, but those clubs are a big thing for many people in NoVA. The activities such as summer swim leagues and summer employment related to those clubs would dry up.

They need to learn to run after 3 pm. They can do it!

Staffing might be an issue. It would have to be a separate contract.

I think teachers would sign up for it, especially those who take 2nd jobs as servers/retail/whatever over the summer or those who’s kids are older and can stay home alone and are looking to pick up some extra $$. My SIL and BIL are teachers in another state, and over summers my BIL does security for events/concerts and my SIL works at Olive Garden. I know they’d jump at this kind of opportunity, but of course the job market in general is a lot worse where they live so that’s the kind of 2nd jobs that are available, really not great stuff.

Oh, they do run after 3 pm, but how many people will drop memberships because for weeks during the summer they can’t use the pool until after kids are out of school? It will be many. They aren’t going to pay for that much reduction in availability.

I guess it depends on how many they need based on student numbers.

Not going to happen. Too many kids around here on summer swim teams. Families in NoVA love going to the pool all summer. No way in hell our summer will be cut short.

That’s not a teacher. That’s a troll. I can’t stomach losing summers.

I have family overseas and summers are everything to me. Year round school is an insult.

He's a politician. His statement was full of "maybe, perhaps, possibility, considering"

This cracks me up. All year people have been screaming that we need to prioritize schoosl over bars and stores. Now it's the pool is more important than school.

It's NoVA priorities change depending on the season.

I think summer school should be offered to help with remediation. However plenty of students are doing fine with DL, so it doesn't make sense to have them go. The idea would be to close the gap, not keep it the same.

I have not read the whole thread but I attended year round school in VA and as a kid, I really liked it. We were not wealthy, so not traveling a bunch, and the summers did get dull in the second half. I liked the frequent breaks. We did 9 weeks on and 3 weeks throughout the year.

How so?
