Yes, many of our smart kids aren't getting any extra enrichment. It has nothing to do with race and kids testing well but they only take 1-2 kids in each elementary school who are white downcountry. Same for the lottery magnet programs but then its only 2-3 kids. We got zero enrichment despite higher scores than many describe on here. |
I heard at schools like Cold Spring pre-COVID there was a daily bus to Dr. Li's after school enrichment because it was so common every single day. Not everyone can afford to buy their way into a magnet. |
I'm a white parent in Silver Spring, and I think this line of "attack" is profoundly dumb and borderline racist. There may have been a bus to Dr. Li from Cold Spring or there may not have been, but I don't see how that's any different from the bus that picked up at my child's school to the horseback riding place, or the van that loaded up to soccer. Different parents have different priorities. |
Just based on DCUM alone, there is overwhelming racism, bias, stereotyping, and xenophobia against Asians that goes completely unchecked and is supported by the woke crowd. So yes, the kids of these DCUM parents are definitely hearing and learning how to cherry pick racism and justify it. |
I am a non-white parent in Rockville and your analogies are flawed. Horseback riding or soccer are not magnet options in MCP. Dr.Li's outfit specifically preps a certain subset of children for entrance exams to magnet programs that, supposedly, should be equally accessible to everyone in public school. Borderline racist or not, this it the reality and it's not just about 'priorities. Low-income kids in this county don't get to go to the 'horseback riding places'. |
most of those kids don't get into the magnet. it's part of general enrichment for those families. many don't speak english and can't teach their kids like white parents do. it levels the playing field. in new york even the poor immigrant parents pay for this enrichment. it's not that expensive. it's about priorities. |
+1 |
the fact that these programs exist does not hurt you or me. if you cared enough, you would pay for your child to go to them. a huge percentage of the students who go to these programs in other places are poor! if you don't make it a priority to send your child don't come on here and bash the parents who do. i don't send my child but i don't complain when my child does not get in either and blame it on people who do. |
Half a million, but go ahead... |
The way to get ahead in America today is just be poor and URM. Society now hands you everything on a plate if you are in these categories? Undeserving magnet admissions for average or below average intellect? Check. 400 SAT point bonus and preference at ivies? Check. Subsidized loans? Check. Preference in recruiting at most companies? Check. Now they’re talking about canceling student loan debt. Do URMs even have to try anymore? |
Agreed. |
This is because the Central American immigrants that come here are from the lowest socioeconomic classes of their countries. Many of these folks don’t even read or write Spanish! The Asian immigrants here usually come from more educated backgrounds. |
NP.. Spanish is a lot closer to English than any Asian dialect. Not only are some of the words pretty similar, but the sentence structure is also very similar between Spanish and English. Asian languages are very different than English - both in phonetics (pronounciation) and sentence structure. An English speaker would find learning Spanish a heck of a lot easier than learning any Asian language, and the reverse is also true. I make no assertions about any group's intelligence. But, some of the parents of these Asian immigrant children are not highly educated. I will say, though, that more than likey, Asian immigrant children probably had some schooling in their home country. There are some kids who come from Latin American countries who did not get much education in their home countries, that is true. But I don't know what the percentages are in MCPS of such students. |
Don't forget promotions! The private company where I work is engaged in a massive (and obvious) effort to promote "POC", especially women POC. Unintended consequence: because others know d*mn well that it is woke AA, we naturally doubt that these folks were the best qualified. |
Define Asian. |
