Why doesn't MCPS care about Asian-Americans and feelings of bias/discrimination?

Anonymous
MCPS has posted more information about their Antiracist audit and highlighted that it had identified these issues. But one of the things I've heard a lot about is that Asian Americans feel disenfranchised and discriminated against by the new magnet process. Forget the debate over who is right because that's a different matter but no one can dispute that it has created a lot of bad feelings. This also includes pitting racial groups against each other at some of the forums they hosted.

Why doesn't MCPS recognize this? Why doesn't MCPS care?

"Your desire/expectation to see a more diverse curriculum that represents all students’ race and ethnic backgrounds.
Your experiences of hate/bias or microagressions within our school communities.
Your concern that not all of your peers are reaching their full academic potential, especially Black/African American and Latinx students and those impacted by poverty, who lag behind their White and Asian peers often due to issues with access, opportunities or expectations."

MCPS doesn't discriminate against race. They hate everyone.

They have spent a lot of time trying to make sure URM are included in all aspects of things. I think they have done a good job with the extended school year option for some low income schools and the free enrichment at similar schools. Not a supporter of how they manipulated the magnet program.

Because MCPS is jumping on the woke train and AA have "white privilege".

NP.. but Asian Americans aren't white.

To answer OP's question though, it's because Asian Americans as a whole are doing very well academically, irrespective of magnet admission changes.

Where is that quotation from? To me, it doesn't read as a dismissal of Asian American concerns, just an acknowledgement that Asian Americans in the DC area tend to be doing well academically and therefore don't need the kind of equity lens as Black/African American and Latinx students.

Sure feels that way right now.

OP, don’t worry. MCPS is basically screwing every race equally right now.

This.

It is not woke to advocate for Asians - lower-income or not.

Asians are a diverse group. There are plenty of lower-income Asians who have not benefitted from any ‘privilege’. Yet, all Asians and Whites get lumped together.

Agree that Asians and Whites get lumped together but this whole situation has created tensions between Black parents and students and Asians and White parents and students and Asians. MCPS doesn't seem to care. If they were really listening they would know kids are turning on other kids due to race because the district has been so opaque about how it goes about ensuring equity. It is creating a lot of resentment and it is the students who are suffering.

A group that is 10% of the population but gets 50% of the magnet seats feels discriminated against?

You know math don't you? If they make up 80% of those with high schools but only get 50% of the seats that is discrimination. I don't know if this is right but just saying what you wrote is really not a great way to look at things.

Do you have a citation for the 80% of "those with high schools" statistic? And isn't admission race-blind?

Because Asians take education seriously no matter what their income level. They are barely in ESOL. Their parents learn English relatively fast. They are Usually are discriminated AGAINST for magnets and still do well overall. They don’t have issues of neglect. So MCPS ignores them.

They are more concerned with hispanics because their parents don’t care about education or assimilating with English.

What are they supposed to do about it? They cannot stop reverse racism and all the crazy stuff going on when its on the parents who are behaving that way and allowing their kids to behave that way.

If kids are turning on other kids, then you need to look at what those kids are hearing at home.
