I am middle class. Which means that I am still on stage 2 or 3 of Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
We spend our money on our health & safety, education (investing in future, hedging our bets) and nutrition (the best ingredients, organic, heathy). |
| Cheap on cars, clothes, and most things really! We prioritize spending money on travel, food, bikes and triathlon expenses, and experiences (mostly related to food and travel). |
| Pp above. The biggest thing is we’re cheap on our home. As in it’s comfortable for us, but less than 10% of our monthly income goes to PITI. That makes spending on travel and hobbies easier. |
| According to my budgeting app, medical expenses is the category where I am spending more than their model expects. I make up for it by being cheap about clothes and cars. |
| Cheap on cars. Very liberal on spending $$ on high quality food. Want to avoid doc visits. |
| I am cheap about wine, buying the house brand at Trader Joe's. I am not cheap about jam. I buy the most expensive brand and savor it on my toast every morning. It's a formula that works well for me. |

Splurges: expensive childcare, self care (e.g. Botox, balayage, etc.), fresh food and takeout, home renovation projects
Cheap: travel (kids are young so we just do cabin camping, not European getaways) and clothes (well not that I buy cheap clothes, but more that I don’t have a lot of them ... I will buy like maybe one or two nice new things per year and otherwise where the same work from home leggings/shirts a lot) |

Spend money on eating out and wine.
Cheap about cars and vacations and still in the first single family house we bought 22 years ago. |
| Cheap on everything except food, education, travel and experiences. We like to eat out at local restaurants on vacations. Splurge on air travel (direct flights, extra space, first class) and sports tickets. |

Our priorities, after financial security, are: kids' enrichment activities, experiences - quality, but not necessarily expensive (travel, host family, meet friends), healthy food, outside activities.
I'd say I don't spend much on spa services: pre-covid I enjoyed a steam, massage and/or a pedicure once in a blue moon, but (almost) never got facials, manicures, etc. I like decent quality clothes, but look for bargains/discounts. I have a few nice soft leather handbags, but not $$$$ designer ones. I'd always rather get on an (economy) flight to Europe to meet up with a friend for a few days (and share an AirBnB) than spend that $ on a handbag or jewelry. |
