Somehow "equality" seems to be bringing down the high achievers versus just making the pie larger for everyone. I see that with so much right now in society too.

As long as there's no cheating or abuse of the children (I knew a girl when I was in school whose parents would beat her and she studied all night and couldn't stay awake during school), prepping is great.

Pro-TJ reform here - what your friend told you is garbage. Those of us who are in favor of TJ reform don't have any issue with parents doing right by their kids. We have an issue with a system that incentivizes spending thousands of dollars and hours on exam prep. There are those who would conflate the two - those people are nuts.

Whites spend even more money on prepping because they pay for private tutors for test preps, classes etc. private tutors cost much more than in class tuitions so we should outlaw those first.

White person here. I've never known a white family in my entire life who paid for tutoring for their kids. This would be very uncommon in the white culture. I've known white families who sent their kids to Catholic schools for a better education.

This is because you do not live in Mclean, Great Falls, or Bethesda. I met many whites who sent their kids to some learning center to get good grades, to pass private school entrance exams, and to get better scores on the SAT. Some secretly hire expensive private tutors for their kids. The difference between Asians and Whites is that poor Asian parents still send their kids to the center to learn because they cannot teach them or help even them with homework due to their language barrier. I know one Asian family whose mother works for a school Cafeteria for insurance and whose father works part time for a construction company. Their kid went to the TJ prep and he got in. Asians believe that investment in education will create a huge impact in the future and will later prove to be worth it.

+2 Obviously the white PP is not upper middle class!

It’s a shame we are forced to live in such a cut throat, ruthless society. Once upon a time, years ago, a public school education was sufficient. Now, for some reason, we have to pay for prep classes in addition to paying taxes for public school or paying for private. It’s madness and unfortunately it’s our culture now. It leaves the playing field very uneven, more so than ever before. If you want your kid to be in the game, you gotta pay, and too bad if you can’t afford it, you’ll be left in the dust. Gotta go sign my kids up for Kumon, I guess. It’s subliminal, but it is cheating just the same.

Your constant attack against Asians instead of encouraging your kids to work hard is cheating hoping for a free ride. Good luck with that in the future. We have a free market system where individuals are free to live as they please as long as it is not illegal. Advocate for a revision to the free market system if you want but don’t be whining that others try harder.

Well, that was my first post so....no offense to Asians or anyone, but like they say, if you can’t beat them, join them. So, sure, I can try and give my kids a leg up, but I guess screw all those poor souls who can’t afford any extras for their kids. Sure, I can cheat too, that’s the only way my kids will be able to stay afloat, same for yours.

Why the victim mindset where any complaint about prepping (not tutoring, not enrichment, but specific TJ TEST PREP) is inherently anti-Asian? For the record, I think extensive athletic training, cram schools/tutoring, etc. to secure your child a better position ahead of others is equally questionable. I'm not willing to throw up my hands and say everything is pay to play now, whether we're talking about youth sports or public school enrichment. It's insane and damaging to children, full stop. The three suicides to date in the current TJ senior class should be all the evidence necessary of a toxic culture at that school.

Since you brought it up, compare the number of suicides at base schools versus Amat TJ. TJ number is lower.

And btw it’s not solely your kid’s hard work, it’s the moola you’re paying to gain an advantage over everyone else. We should all be so fortunate.

Same moola used for private sports coaches, travel teams, private tutors, private college counselors, private educational testers, private donors, legacies, etc.

Saying Asians using money to get ahead is somehow worse than when Whites, Blacks, insert any other race here, do it is RACIST.

If you do mathnasium to catch up, or get a head, or just for the hell of it- no one cars

People absolutely do mock Asians for doing Kumon on this website.

Not to mention whites spending millions bribing schools officials, coaches, admissions officers, doctors etc. etc.

In what world is signing your kids up for kumon the same thing as cheating?!
That is some bs logic only Americans would entertain.

She can spend the money the way they see fit. It's not that they stole the money from you.

Honestly, I wasn’t even aware that extra prep was even a thing until recently. I succeeded just fine sans any prep classes. My son is truly gifted, however now I feel like I must sign him up for extra prep classes just to be able to compete with these clearly mediocre kids who have been receiving extra prep classes since they were 3. I have no choice, I have to sign him up. Damn it.

Welcome to DCUM where the logic comes to die. Practicing additional math problems is considered cheating, practicing 3pt shots is a great thing to do.

At our local mathnasium they do cogAt math prep which I do consider to be a form of cheating the system.
