As long as there's no cheating or abuse of the children (I knew a girl when I was in school whose parents would beat her and she studied all night and couldn't stay awake during school), prepping is great.

Pro-TJ reform here - what your friend told you is garbage. Those of us who are in favor of TJ reform don't have any issue with parents doing right by their kids. We have an issue with a system that incentivizes spending thousands of dollars and hours on exam prep. There are those who would conflate the two - those people are nuts.

Whites spend even more money on prepping because they pay for private tutors for test preps, classes etc. private tutors cost much more than in class tuitions so we should outlaw those first.

White person here. I've never known a white family in my entire life who paid for tutoring for their kids. This would be very uncommon in the white culture. I've known white families who sent their kids to Catholic schools for a better education.

White parents also pay lot of money to private psychologists to bribe their way into aap. We should outlaw those as well.

Pro-TJ reform and totally agree!!!

We are Asian, do not prep, and have a child in a magnet program. While we are well-to-do, we also know very low-income Asian families who spend all they have on academics for their children.

It's disgusting that people openly discriminate against Asians, as if we were one cohesive group, who spoke the same language, belonged to the same culture, ate the same food, worshiped the same deities, or had similar political views. Asia is HUGE and DIVERSE. We are not inherently better at math or science. We work hard to achieve, even for those of us that employ rather more organic methods than straight-up test prep.

If some people cheated or nearly cheated, then punish them individually, and find a way to regulate entry into magnets that minimizes future cheating. But do so in a way that doesn't punish an entire continent. You did the same for multiple ethnicities that came before us: Native Americans, Blacks, various groups from Europe, and Jews. Have you evolved enough to not do the same to Asians?

What exactly is being done in a new policy to “punish the entire continent”? Taking away the advantage provided by paid cram schools is not targeting one race or continent. It’s targeting cheating. If this does not seem like cheating to you, then we have a cultural difference between us. This is not the same as preparing for the SAT or reading to your kids at night. The accusation is that this company obtained a copy of a test that was supposed to be secret. It was supposed to be secret precisely so people did not teach their kids how to take it ahead of time.

There is no proof. It's all hearsay. All I know about that center is that the guy who owns the center makes kid really work hard and is very strict. It's possible kids saw familiar questions. Doesnt mean they got the exam questions before hand.

It was never a problem when tj was predominantly white. Now something need to be done for the blacks and browns when tj becomes predominantly Asian. It’s very interesting when you think about it. Guess which race will be the biggest beneficiary with the change?

I agree that whites will be the biggest beneficiaries. What I don't get are the multiple posts that are anti URM despite the acknowledgment that whites will be the ones that benefits most.

There is no law against prepping or preparing.

Agreed. There is also no law against a non race based lottery.

Corrupt fcps will never do that unless blacks complain.

You are misinformed about the power blacks have. FCPS is run by a bunch of self serving people who think they know better than anyone else.

Except it is illegal under the disparate impact or adverse impact.

Of course there's no law against it. But there shouldn't be a system in place that incentivizes spending thousands of dollars to gain an advantage. We pro-TJ reform folks agree that this applies to college exam prep as well, which is why we applaud schools moving to test-blind and test-optional admissions processes.

If you're going to try to make an argument, explain why there SHOULD be a system in place that rewards families for spending thousands of dollars and hours to gain an advantage.

Right. White parents spend too much money on their kids prepping.

There are definitely areas where other races use what they have to their advantage to get a leg up- but no uproar from the masses and xenophobic statements made about them.

Rich white parents prep the hell out their kids with tutors and paying off college counselors.

Legacies overstep the regulars.

Sports scholarships and recruited athletes for some sports are nearly the majority one race. No one cries foul there.

Private sport coaches are used by the privileged and not so privileged to prep for intense competition, get on the right teams, get better recs on applications.

Private college counselors that know the right people in the right places give huge advantages to kids that may not cut it as a regular applicant.

Some people having lived here for generations, know how to navigate the ins and outs of schools, colleges, workplaces and they know someone that knows someone, that went to school with someone and thus get ahead that way.

Many Asian families do not have any of the above privleges afforded to them. What they do have is a culture that values top notch education.

This BS with white people and black people crying about prepping being unfair is so hypocritical. But since it's the Asians that do it and it's okay to disparage Asians, their culture, etc, then it's okay to relentlessly attack them for making their kids study. I mean how dare they try to get ahead.
