TIPPING TIPPING TIPPING

Anonymous
I'm one of those folks who's never made peace with the whole practice of tipping. Money was tight growing up and not much better for me. I either over tip or am oblivious that someone is supposed to be tipped. Either way, I hate the whole practice and really wish it went away. For now, I try to arrange my life so I can avoid it.

Thank you. Here's $20. This is all crappy and now I'm going to make PB&J for the rest of the week to get back on budget. Just tell me up front how much this is going to cost and don't make me shove dollar bills at everyone like I'm trying to escape a bad strip show.

DH tips $5 in cash for takeout and $10-15 for deliveries. He always gets great service so he must be doing something right.

I would be happier having it built into the cost of the order but tip customary amounts.

Here we are almost 2 years later [this thread was started in September 2020] still complaining about tipping. And sadly it's only got worse since then because now not only is there a tip but there are all kinds of fees tacked on...

From today's paper:

Washington Post - Do you know how to tip?
https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/interactive/2021/how-much-to-tip-bellhop-hotel-housekeeping/?itid=hp_temp2-subfavs

I know I wasn't raised right and just wish all this tipping B.S. would go away. Was it always this complicated and I just didn't notice? Does any other country know a better way?

Completely agree with you but I always thought that was bc I didn't grow up here. Just charge whatever you want to charge without expecting random arbitrary tips that spark arguments and judgemental stares, no?
Are there any other developed countries that tipping is so prevalent across so many services? I'm sorry but this practice seems very archaic and backwards to me.

When picking up food, I tip generously at my favorite restaurants, because I would hate for them to go out of business or have trouble retaining staff.

I tip a little bit at other places, just because I feel it's nice to.

BUT I do not judge you AT ALL if you choose not to tip! You are not a bad person. It's perfectly fine.

I have stopped typing absolutely everyone, except for sit down restaurants and the salon dot I used to go overboard with my tips at the salon at 2:35% but now I’m just giving 25% and that’s it.I don’t tip Uber, Uber eats, DoorDash, pick up food, or anyone else with their hand out. It’s a myth that if you don’t tip on door Dash, you won’t get your deliveries. I use DoorDash twice a week for groceries and always receive my orders on time, no tips, because it’s not my job to support a multi million dollar business who doesn’t want to pay their employees wages. I don’t want to hear About how I need to do extra tipping because of gas or whatever, because I live in Los Angeles and a minimum wage here starts at $15 an hour plus we pay a stipend for gas.nope, no more.

Same. I tipped takeout in height of pandemic, but I stopped. I don't use door dash, ubereats or delivery at all.

Everyone is hiring and hurting for employees. Restaurants have had sufficient time to re-structure how the pay and run takeout service. If servers that are only working takeout aren't payed minimum wage by now, not my problem. Plenty of other places are hiring and paying more than minimum wage. Restaurant goes out of business? Don't care. There are more important businesses that need those employees anyway- and will pay them more than the cheap restaurant owner giving them $2.75/hr.

As for everyone else that has a tip jar, PASS.

Everywhere I go now there is the IPad touch screen thing that automatically asks me if I want to tip (and starts at like 15%). I’ve always been a good tipper but so feel like businesses are just pawning off not paying their employees to customers. It’s gotten out of hand.

Yes it has, but the iPad Tip screen also has a no tip option too - I hit that every time

We stopped tipping and now do pickup, can't afford it anymore. There is another thread that explains that's ok.

I tipped my server/bartender $200 on a $61 check at lunch today. She was grateful, I was happy I put a smile on someone’s face today. Win win.

You need to tip on pickup too unless it’s fast causal or fast food.
