TIPPING TIPPING TIPPING

We tip $10 on take out now. Its the right thing to do, Our HHI is only $150k but we didnt lose our jobs and want to do right by small businesses and the people that work for them.

Only on DCUM can someone say their HHI is “only” $150k

We live very comfortably on less.

You don't need to tip on take out and if you do a few dollars.

We don't tip for pickups unless we're ask for different things (extra things to be added, etc). When just ordering something off their menu and they throw it in a bag, forget it.

I understand your reasoning, but the restaurant should increase their prices so the person packing the food can be paid a high enough non-tip wage.

Yea but they won’t until they are forced to. Restaurants are prob the worst industry in terms of wage theft too. Do you support political measures to fix these issues, and are you ready to pay what it would really cost to eat out if they were implemented? If not, just shut up and tip and be thankful you don’t have to work in a restaurant to pay your bills.

I’ve been tipping 20% for takeout throughout the pandemic. In normal times I only tip 10% but I’m scared about the consequences for my local economy.

Frankly tipping makes us order out less. I can’t stand tipping when I drive and get my food. I’m so over tipping.

The hostess or expo boxing up your to-go order likely makes less than minimum wage because the restaurant (and government) expect that you will tip them. If you have a problem with that you should speak to your elected officials, or the restaurant owner. Don’t take it out on the poor hourly employees, who are likely making 30k/year or less.

Pre Covid we used to get pizza once a week from a nearby small restaurant - I never tipped for pickup then because I was already paying significantly more than I would for a fast-food pizza from Dominos or the like.

Now I tip at least 20%, sometimes more, every time. I'm so grateful the restaurant is still there and I know they (like many other small restaurants) have been hit hard. My tip won't make or break them, but it's a tangible way to show that I want their business to survive this terrible time.

General question. What about fast food places like Chic-fil-A? When they bring the food to your car, do you tip? If so, what amount?

I was startled the other day. I ordered online for my mom and myself while we were on the way home after a doctor appointment. I was totally unprepared for their elaborate setup in the parking lot and the stream of people they had running food out to cars. I scrambled and got a tip out but the runner acted like she didn't want to take my money. Anyway, does anyone else tip at Chic-fil-A?

Hostesses have to make at least minimum wage. Not sure what you mean by "expo" -- assume that's a typo -- but the only people exempt from minimum wage are waiters/waitresses.

I’m a nanny and no one is tipping me for risking my life. I haven’t taken a day off during pandemic and my employers aren’t staying home. I’m not tipping extra, no way! I tip the same as I did before, and I don’t tip for pick up unless it’s somewhere I go regularly.

They're actually not exempt. People who perpetuate this myth don't understand the law. Servers are entitled to make at least minimum wage for their shift. If the tipped wage + their tips for their shift do not add up to minimum wage, the employer is supposed to make up the difference. Sh!tty employers don't, and it's wage theft.

The reality is that a lot of these folks are making well above minimum wage, given how tip crazy Americans are, and how everyone believes the myth that tips are required for their livelihoods. That's why you get a lot of resistance from servers whenever there is discussion of getting rid of the tipped wage. A lot of them are making bank with the current system.

You don't have to feel guilty for not wanting to subsidize the wages of someone else's employee for doing nothing more than the job they already get paid to do (and usually barely that), and the service/goods you already paid for.

Same, except I didn’t always used to tip for pickup. Now I do every time.

So do servers and restaurant workers.
