Is your pool allowing kids who can’t swim laps?

The board put lots of language in the procedures about remaining distanced while lap swimming, and be sure you are teaching your kids. The reality is people float up and down the lanes chatting, kids get to play on the diving boards, and parents engage with their children in the shallow end. Every person has to do a health screening for covid symptoms to enter. Its making the best of a bad situation. I have zero COVID concerns with the way my pool is implementing Phase 2. We are much more distanced at the pool then if we went to the park or on a hiking trail.

The reality is that if you are in VA, this is all not allowed and I hope the health department shuts you down.

Had a blast at the pool today!

My wife and two kids had 1/2 of the shallow end reserved. We jumped off the side a bunch of times, threw the ball around and floated on the noodle we bought from home for a while. We also were showed my three year old how to float without floaties and practice his doggie paddle and my five year old was working on his side stroke.

It was great exercise for us all and very instructional for our kids.

That’s great. It was against an order from the governor. The fact that you all had a blast changes nothing.

How is what PP described against orders?

Family had a reserved area that I assume was 10’ away from others. Everyone was either exercising or instructing?

No one- even family members- can be less than 10’ from each other in a pool. A mom cannot be in the pool within 10’ of her own kid. Whether you believe it’s dumb or not doesn’t matter.

That is inaccurate. Parents can be near their kids. At our pool, we're still at the lap-swimming-only stage; they're being conservative implementing Phase 2, which I appreciate.

Our MD pool is allowing free swim with a reservation system for up to 50 people total

My pool said the same thing when it comes to swimming in the water. They said the lifeguards cannot be held responsible for determining who is in what family during swimming so everyone must be 10 ft apart while swimming. But on the pool deck families can be closer.

Coronavirus isn't believed to be able to survive in a pool, thanks to the fact it's filled with a bunch of chlorinated water which would kill the virus. It seems like everyone who's clutching their pearls about people being 10 feet apart in the water need to chill? The problem comes on the parts of the pool which are shared, like the handrails. So take your hand sanitizer, stay away from other families/kids when you're OUT of the pool and maybe calm down a little?

It's not about "clutching pearls" or "needing to chill". In many cases, it's about obeying the rules set forth by the Board at your pool. At ours, the rules very clearly state that even family members must maintain 10' distance during lap swim because the club "is not providing Learn to Swim instruction in Phase 2". That's a direct quote. I'm plenty calm about it, but the fact remains that when I paid our dues this year, I agreed to follow whatever rules the Board voted on. Right now that means that if two members of my household reserve a lane together, we stay 10' apart while we're using it.

Ours too. Socially distancing from other families but families can sit and swim together.

I'm the PP who mentioned that at our pool families can be in contact while lap swimming. Part of our pool's rules is that only members of the same family can be in a lane, and must be signed up in advance, so lifeguards know that families are together. We are not, however, allowed on the pool deck, at all, except to drop our stuff before we jump in the pool. Pools have basically been on their own to interpret the state's guidelines. The NVSL pools have worked together to try to figure this out, but I think each pool board is issuing guidance based on their understanding of the guidelines and input from members.

Wrong

- see here:
https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/environmental-health/phase-1-considerations-for-aquatic-facilities/

Quoting: “ Phase Two allows indoor and outdoor pools to open. Activities allowed include lap swimming with 3 swimmers per lane, diving, and exercise classes with participants spaced 10’ from each other. All participants in pool activity must be 10’ from other participants to the greatest extent possible, and 10’ from other patrons not of their household while on deck. Incidental passing of swimmers sharing lanes is acceptable.”

It’s been discussed a lot. People from the same household could be together on the deck but not in the pool. The poster having a blast DID violate the governor’s order.

We are with an Nvsl pool also. Read the prior post. Pools have NOT been basically on their own to interpret the guidelines. If your pool allows members of the same family to be in a lane closer than 10’ of each other, it’s a blatant and willful violation.
