If you teach in VA you might want to transfer to another school system bc it was emphatically stated multiple times by the governor that students are not required to wear masks.

A student who will not wear a mask in my classroom will work in the office or the hallway. No one will enter my classroom without a mask on.

Again, you don’t get to decide that. If you refuse to work around students without masks on, you can quit. You do not have the authority to require a mask in “your” classroom. Sorry.

Actually teachers DO get to decide what happens in their classrooms. And I am a parent who will make sure that our principal and school superintendent knows that I support teachers on this. All children and adults in a school should wear masks and maintain social distancing, and it is a deal-breaker for me if not everyone is wearing a mask. The reason: I think parents who don't want masks are lax about safety protocols and I don't want any of them near me or my kids.

Actually you’re wrong. I’m sorry. I support students wearing masks in school and think they should. But if you teach in a public school and masks are not required for students by law you legally CANNOT require them in your classroom. You are free to resign but you cannot go above the governor. I am in administration and currently dealing with this issue and how fall will look in schools. You simply do not have the authority.

+1. I bet there's a huge overlap between the parents who don't think masks are necessary and the parents who bring their kids back to school the day after they've been sent home with a high fever, dosed up on Tylenol.

Definitely. They see school as a service they are entitled to, whether their child is sick or not. I’ve had parents try to tell me to give their child fever reducers when we called them. We aren’t allowed to do that and I wouldn’t even if we were. If your child has a fever they are contagious and they need to go home, period.

And by law a teacher cannot be forced to work in an unsafe and unsanitary environment.

So, if your son/daughter will come to campus with a cynic and entitled attitude you can bet that he/she will he left outside the room just like you do with trash.

That simple.

You can't legally exclude a child from your class for not wearing a mask if children aren't required to wear masks. Why is that so hard to understand?
Anonymous
If you are in VA, the governor made very clear that students can be encouraged *but not required* to wear masks. I don't know what is going on in MD or DC.

NP but that is a really nasty post and a really gross thing to compare a child to trash. Perhaps you should spend the summer reflecting on whether being in the classroom in the fall is the best decision for you. Because you can’t force kids to wear masks and you can’t kick them out if there isn’t a rule. You will lose that one and might lose your job.

I’m a teacher and there is absolutely no reason for me to wear a mask if the children aren’t wearing one. It only works if everyone is wearing a mask. I’m not going to subject myself to that discomfort everyday if it won’t have an effect on my or my family’s safety.

Friendly reminder that masks are actually a tool for the elite to subject you like the slave you are.

Prolonged use of that scam creates hypoxia.

Any teacher here looking forward to the consequences of reduced oxygen intake and experiencing cellular cancer?

One hearing impaired child in the class and that will go away.

If the children aren't transmitting the virus to your or each other, then the teachers should just wear masks when they are close to other teachers or adults.

Since you are in administration, you know full well you will allow the teacher to do what s/he wants in the classroom because you fear the PR backlash if you even deign to consider disciplining the teacher for imposing such a requirement. So drop the bravado.

I think face shields are the way to go in schools.

No, sorry, your thinking is wrong on this one, unfortunately. As an administrator, I cannot back up a teacher who is illegally kicking a student out of class for something that is not against either the law or a schoolwide rule/policy. If a teacher continued to do so, his/her job would absolutely be in jeopardy. You cannot force students to do/wear something they are not legally or by school policy required to do. The only PR backlash would be against the teacher trying to rise above the law.

I was a teacher for many years and I get the frustration, but no, you do not have much power in “your” classroom.

All children wear masks in China.

The children can and do spread the virus. I’m not going to be close to them next year.
