Teachers obliged to wear masks. Students not required?

It was probably because of hookworm, actually.

Possibly. It was a rural area near water. I know that there was a used shoe drive for several years of her early schooling because she talked about that.

If you teach in VA you might want to transfer to another school system bc it was emphatically stated multiple times by the governor that students are not required to wear masks.

A student who will not wear a mask in my classroom will work in the office or the hallway. No one will enter my classroom without a mask on.

No mask, no education. Simple.

That would require changes to discipline policies and changes in DCUM culture. Even if former gets through, the later won’t. DCUM parents don’t care if a para with a heart condition dies.

We're already working on it in our school. The admin don't want kids walking around without masks either. I heard one say that the kids will be going home with packets and links to online material. Fine with me. If the choice is my safety or your kid's education, I'm going with my safety every single time.

Brain, lung, heart damage due to insufficient oxygen.

NO!

I wonder how those surgeons and nurses who perform multi-hour surgeries don't all end up damaged. Science is just weird like that, I guess.

Obviously not everyone agrees with you.

Every child in China wore a mask to school when they returned to school in the spring. I'm sure parents were arrested if their child did not wear a mask being that it is China.

They do in China.

Nice try.

Surgeons have equipment that is top of the line. They could have a 2 hour gonzo session with them masks and still be balling on your raggedy a$$.

Teachers? As per usual we’ll EXPECT they use THEIR money to buy crappy cloth masks from amazon or some other warehouse from China.

What could go wrong?!

Not PP, but I bought 12 of these for our staff. https://hardwirellc.com/products/hardwire-face-shield

They are made in Maryland too.

Again, you don’t get to decide that. If you refuse to work around students without masks on, you can quit. You do not have the authority to require a mask in “your” classroom. Sorry.

The school should give each child who needs it 2-3 masks. If they will not wear those or the ones they have, sending them home with packets is absurd. If they want an education they need to follow the rules. I want my kids safe. I'd gladly donate masks to our school if needed.

Its public safety. Your brat may refuse but its not just about keeping the adults safe but also the kids, their families and anyone they come in contact with. If you cannot parent your brat to wear a mask, you have far bigger problems.

Actually teachers DO get to decide what happens in their classrooms. And I am a parent who will make sure that our principal and school superintendent knows that I support teachers on this. All children and adults in a school should wear masks and maintain social distancing, and it is a deal-breaker for me if not everyone is wearing a mask. The reason: I think parents who don't want masks are lax about safety protocols and I don't want any of them near me or my kids.

+1. I bet there's a huge overlap between the parents who don't think masks are necessary and the parents who bring their kids back to school the day after they've been sent home with a high fever, dosed up on Tylenol.

If students are required to wear masks the entire teaching day is going to be spent telling kids to put their masks back on. As a teacher, I’d love if it were required, but realistically I’d like to be able to move on if there’s one kid in the class that won’t put it on. We have a zero tolerance cell phone policy and it works because we can take the phone away and end the discussion. With masks it’s going to be constant talking about it.

And yes, I can send a student out of the room if they’re not complying, they’ll get sent to the office, maybe a call home, they’ll come back with their mask on and then take it off again. If I can ignore the child without the mask we’re not telling students the way to get out of class is to take their masks off. Once they see their noncompliance won’t get a reaction it will be more likely they’ll just leave it on.

Parent support is going to be crucial too, so if the parent is at home talking about how masks kill brain cells it’s going to be impossible to get the students to wear them.
