White Folks Guide to Protesting

Nah, it’s basically a parody of what a well-intentioned ally would do. The Trump supporters aren’t allies to begin with, so they aren’t worrying too much about any guidelines for how they conduct themselves in a protest.

Fine, then comply. Also, give them all of your money and ill-gotten white privilege gains.

The list doesn’t ask that I do that. It requests that I comply with what black organizers are arranging. It seems like a reasonable request. I’m unsure why it’s got you so riled up, though.

No one with good intentions tells people that they should do what random strangers in a crowd tell them to do immediately and without question. Deal with it.

Any of us could be the victim of police abuse. It's not like white people are exempt and it's only about black people. Everyone should be concerned about police behavior with citizens.

I used to be deeply involved in political activism but sh!t like this is why I stopped. I was told not to cry “white tears,” to “center black voices,” to relinquish any leadership role I ever earned if challenged by a WOC. Also we were told WOC shouldn’t be asked to work for free, even when our organizations were volunteer lead and run. I saw mismanagement and even theft of fundraising dollars as interlopers overthrew actual leaders demanding their voices be “centered.”

Now I just worry about myself and my family.

Particularly in a potentially dangerous situation with agitated police and a global pandemic. Come on.

For a long time, it was Latino/Latina, but one day it was Latinx and you got the side eye if you didn't use the new term.

We were encouraged to refer to "persons of color" for a long time, but now it's BIPOC. When did that happen?

We would like to be allies, but apparently if you didn't get the right memo you will be a "performative" ally and that doesn't sound too good.

Apart from posting safely and anonymously on DCUM, I mostly just read and listen because the odds of saying or doing the wrong thing seem to be extremely high. If I do show up, I think I'll just hand out water bottles like a bystander at a marathon.

Yeah, pretty much same here. The words keep changing, yet you aren't supposed to be 'silent'...

+1. Interesting insight from someone who has actually been there and isn’t just spouting crap from the comfort of their home.

So, whites are ornamental stupid sheep.
Cool.
Watched the video of BLM guy telling a white girl to get on her knees. She readily got down on her knees and apologized for her white privilege.
Cool.

Agree. What’s being asked is that space is left for black voices, not Hadley from Clarendon whose finally noticing what’s happening around her and feeling the spirit. Also why is it a big deal to pass someone a bottle of water and a Lara bar? Settle down. Really. so little is being asked of you. all your being asked is to show up, notice what’s going on around you, pitch in the way that would be most helpful for this specific event. To follow directions means to not get wild and start having arguments with officers because you’ve never had to fear that, your actions can put someone else in danger. It’s being spelled out because it needs to be spelled out. it’s intense to read a list like that. And it’s not nuanced because there’s not time for that. So if you’re not comfortable with this list it is better you stay home. because people out there protesting need to be safe.

Ugh I really hope I’m not adding fuel to a fire. I still completely believe in the mission. While I’m white my kids and sibling are not, and I still believe police abuse is one of the most pressing issues of our time. But there are definitely people in this space trying to capitalize on white guilt and act out their aggression.

No, speak! Why should anyone be silenced? We are not in the former Soviet Union, or at least we are not supposed to be.

Thank you for trying to pull that back from the flames....

The viral video you are discussing was not a BLM guy and was posted by a prankster. This is disinformation.
