White Folks Guide to Protesting

I can't grok with 4 or 5.

5 just ideologically, because we should be a united people. (I am OK with staying silent and not leading, etc. but not with someone saying "go sit in that corner because of your race.")

4 is definitely a no go. What if someone asks me to do something dangerous? I don't think anyone should be asked to give up their autonomy. It's not anything I would ever ask of anyone else.

Also, it seems odd that this is framed as black and white. Where do asian and hispanic people fit in?

I'm not going to protests but I if I did, would go with a black friend or a co-worker. I'd follow their lead.

I worry that short-term subservience will end up taking precedence over long-term equality. I don't see that many white people who really buy into the notion that they should prostrate themselves indefinitely because some white leaders have screwed up.

Ok. So essentially you don’t like to be told what to do. Got it.

White Folks Guide to Protesting

If you are a white person considering joining a protest this week, here is a list of rules put together for you. Friends of color, if they have forgotten anything, please add.

1, FOLLOW CALLS ONLY. Do not initiate or lead calls. Your job is to follow and add your voice when it is called for.
2. DO NOT TAKE SELFIES. Ask to take pictures or videos of individuals. You are there to witness only. Film the police as much as possible. Your goal is documentation to ensure that the true narrative is told.
3. BE HELPFUL. Hand out water and snacks. Make sure protest leaders are hydrated and fed. This is exhausting work, help keep their energy up.
4. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. If a black person tells you to do something, you do it immediately without question. You respect the authority and the decisions of the black protesters at all times.
5. STAY IN THE BACK UNTIL YOU ARE CALLED FORWARD. If you hear “White people to the front” or “Allies to the front” step forward and link arms with other white people to form a human shield.
6. WHEN YOU ARE AT THE FRONT, YOU ARE SILENT. Your job is to be a body. You are there to support only. The only voices on the police line should be black voices.
7. REMAIN CALM AT ALL TIMES. This is difficult. You will be emotional and your system will be flooded with adrenaline. Remember this is life and death for the protesters. Save your emotions for home. DO NOT AGITATE.
This is not a game. Joining a protest is a serious decision. Make sure you are there for the right reason. Support the safety of black protesters at all times.
Copied/pasted.

Great now it's gone way overboard and people are going to dismiss this whole thing as silly. Lol imagine if you swamped black for white...

I’ve been to protests for various things over the years, including the current ones and #4 is a no-go. Also, as a random protester not close to the organizers, I am not handing them food during these covid times. I have brought a case of bottled water to hand out along the way. Finally, organizers of a recent march actually encouraged photos of all kinds including selfies and wanted participants to post them to show solidarity with the protest.

Thoughts?

I just don’t believe the “rules”. Thousands of black people and white people are protesting together and seem to be doing their own thing....protest.

I don’t think #4 is a commandment the way it’s being processed here. You are at this table as a guest, behave like one.

Do you know anything about world history? Evil is found in all races. But honestly the Enlightenment AND America have absolutely made the world a better place. Lots of people flock to the United States from places where they are part of a racial majority. They seem to think it is worth it.
