Grocery workers starting to die- we need a better system to get food to people

Have the workers in the store gather up the groceries and bag them
Someone take them to the car

Or, each grocery store should do a 10 person limit

Ffs. I can think of a handful of folks right now that can't order food online. I already shop for one of them. Doesn't even have a smartphone much less home internet. Let's think things through a bit more before posting.

Still waiting for the STAY HOME!!! geniuses who somehow found even this thread to explain how that applies even to food/groceries, btw.

WF was much better. Gloves and hand sanitizer out for everyone. All the workers I saw had masks and gloves.

Giant in Georgetown Square Bethesda has installed a little glass partition between the cashier and the customer, did your Giant at least have that for them?

Well, it's not exactly "you get what you get" they do tell you exactly what type of fruit and vegetable you're getting in each and every box.

It's a great idea, thanks for the link!

It sounds like WF's is better but they are above my price range. Has anyone been to Harris Teeter or Safeway and had a better experience?

Are people finding it better to go first thing in the morning or later at night?

I don’t know about Giant specifically but many stores have special hours designated for seniors and others who are high risk in the mornings. You should check. I think going at night just before closing can be a good time or just a weekday around 10am or so: after senior hours but before lunch hour.

3am - 4am is perfect at Safeway in Kensington and Giant on Old Georgetown Rd in Bethesda.

Not a soul in the place but you and the employees restocking (and it's usually the time when deliveries like TP come in too).

That is what I meant. You get what you get and you don’t get upset. No choices.

This is awful. Curbside pick up, delivery, self checkout to name a few. Convert many furloughed workers to delivery workers.

You can't just force people to be delivery drivers.

Yes it does now.
The best time to go to Kentlands Giant has been evening, when meat department is stocked and store only has a few customers.

Safest is Sams scan and go (you scan the item on your phone, check out/pay on your phone, and then the checker at the door scans your phone and one item.) No contact.

But that eliminates a lot of jobs of people who need them.

Alternative to delivery spots is time-synchronized curbside pickup.

For those without internet access, time-linked instore shopping with one way aisles and using a percent of the store's capacity.

Or it could be by surname and first character of your last name. E.g, people whose last names start with A or B are 9-10am, C and D, 10-11 am, etc.

Y’all are all crazy. People have to be able to go to the grocery store

That is horrible. I get the impression people around here really dont understand how MOST people ACTUALLY have to live. Its not acceptable.

I really feel closing stores to the general public, providing safety gear and turning employees into order filling shoppers and delivery drivers would be a great option.

There would need to be a way to handle people who cant order online, and perhaps for some people a set recurring delivery would be a good option. You order once and then its set. THere must be a better way than killing people.

Yes!
Everything should be delivery and pickup only.

Growth mindset. Think outside the box. Phone call-in orders.

The answer shouldn’t be a whiny “but we cannot”. Instead think “how can we make that happen?”

It's been suggested elsewhere on this site. The government could simply deliver everyone some rice and beans once a week.
