Grocery workers starting to die- we need a better system to get food to people

Anonymous
Our Giant has plastic sheilds in front of the registers and the employees are all in masks. Surprising it isn't consistent at all stores. I worry so much about one older lady who has been there for at least 15 years- she's working all the time. I so appreciate the people that are working the stores.

Karens everywhere are killing grocery store cashiers, then wringing their hands about how “we have to do something”.

Ok.

How about this: STAY HOME!

Then grocery store cashiers wouldn’t have to go to work (or be paid) and they wouldn’t get infected by nonsymptamatic Karen and die.

A young woman who worked at Giant in Laurel recently died of Covid 19. I can’t believe the story isn’t getting more attention. I only found out because a friend sent me a GoFundMe for her family.

You are aware that food is an actual necessity, yes?

You are aware that food is an actual necessity, yes? Does it magically appear on my doorstep if I STAY HOME!? Let me guess, you feel it's appropriate to outsource the risk to delivery service workers?

Grocery stores should just ship the orders or have curb pickup. No human interaction needed. The stores can be wiped down and only employees spaced out should be in the buildings.

What a histrionic article. Of course people in grocery stores will get this, but like the what 4 people this article cites is a ridiculous number to get worked up about. People need food, protect the workers but it’s not like you’re going to close grocery stores. That’s a sure recipe for civil unrest and the end of all quarrantining

NP, but plenty of people are posting about going to the grocery store every day or every other day to get out of the house. And others are posting about going to multiple stores in a row regularly. Even once a week is too often and just not necessary! If every stuck to shopping once every 2-3 weeks, stores would be less crowded and workers would be safer.

We dropped the ball on masks so colossally.

All grocery stores should provide masks, turn their employees into shoppers (like instacart), and delivery persons and/or offer pickup.

Anyone else find it upsetting that her mother allowed her to still go to work?

“She said, ‘Mommy, I’m going to work because no one else is going to help the senior citizens get their groceries,’ ” her mother, Zenobia Shepherd, told The Post. “She only stopped going to work when she could no longer breathe.”

Not everyone has room / fridge space etc to store enough for 2-3 weeks. Must be nice.

Everyone just needs to stop going to grocery store, and they will get the message. Live on the extra can of beans and mushrooms in the back of the pantry. I’ve had so many friends FaceTime me from home and their kitchens are overflowing with snacks and cereal and random stuff. Eat down some of that ration, maybe the meals will be subpar but you will hardly starve or get scurvy. And give stores the message, we want curbside.

We are storing all our pantry supplies under dining table. Family of 5. 1 fridge. We havent gone grocery shopping or had food delivered in 3 weeks, though we are now on powdered milk and some canned pasta. But kids haven’t wasted away yet.

Couldn’t we have some kind of system where everyone gets an assigned day of the week / timeframe ? And the orders are received by curbside pickup? With exceptions obviously for serious emergencies?

How long do you think people can do this though? Some of us are already, and can't feed a family indefinitely on what's in the back of the cupboard. My kitchen probably appears to be "overflowing" because it's a tiny apartment kitchen and i only have two cupboards for pantry food!
