Md Dems want to put sales tax on services

Moco resident here. For the first time in my life, I’m voting republican at the state and local level this November.

If Bernie or Warren wins, the tax on good and services will go up to 25%.

Just like in Western Europe.

That's how they can afford their awesome safety net.

No, you're not, because you can't. There aren't any state offices on the ballot this November, and the only local offices on the ballot this November are for the Board of Education, and that's non-partisan.

It's just a sneaky way to increase taxes without increasing property and income taxes, which would be super unpopular. MoCo doesn't really have a diverse economy, and a vast number of jobs are service related. In effect, they've instituted an increase in income or sales taxes under a different name..

Like here, VAT is either reduced or not charged on certain items, like helmets, medical services, car seats.

I don't like the idea of increased taxes, but I think most of that is because we are not used to it. If we lived in the UK, we'd be used to it, so it wouldn't bug as that much, AND we would never ever worry about out of control health care costs or college costs, like we do here.

You wouldn't, considering there's no fee charged for court-appointed representation.

This is a STATE bill, not a county bill.

Also, yes, putting a sales tax on services as well as goods is a way to increase sales taxes, by definition. We already have sales taxes on some goods; we would now also have sales taxes on some services..

I think you missed PP's point. HINT: "this November" was not the point.

Right? Taxes aren't: the state takes your money and throws it down a hole.

The point of taxes is to pay for government to do stuff We The People want the government to do. Like universal health care coverage, and college costs.

It might not have been the PP's point, but it certainly is a point. This "MoCo resident" doesn't seem to be an informed or regular voter. MoCo residents voted for state and local offices 2 years ago, in November 2018. The PP doesn't remember voting for governor and state legislature just 2 years ago?

Taxes pay for the government to provide services. The alternatives are fewer government services, or deficits. And the state can't run a deficit, so the only remaining alternative is for the government to provide fewer services. Is that ok with you?
