CAP Versus Regional IB program?

They know that Kennedy is the weakest school in the DCC.

Clarification. Einstein's IB does not have a test-in cohort, nor a middle years programme.

True. But there are pre-IB classes in 9th and 10th. And it's not test in but good enough to go to the local school rather than Kennedy.

Every established MCPS magnet started under the same circumstances. Someone has to be first!

yes - and that's why I love the idea of these new programs, but would be happier waiting a bit to see how it shakes out. Great it's there, but maybe not so great to be in the first (or second or third) cohort. CAP is a known quantity and maybe the Kennedy IB will be awesome, but it's an unknown at this point. Commute would also be a factor, I suppose... What's the principal of Kennedy like? That would affect my decision, too...

RM is half the distance to Churchill than Kennedy. From a commute and busing standpoint, it would make more sense to have RM be a regional center for Wootton and Churchill.

The building is already 20% over capacity.

And Crown HS will relieve that.

Anonymous wrote:The points

1. RM is over capacity. It is a stressed/unhealthy physical plant Full Stop.
2. Montgomery County has more kids now that would do well in an IB program than it did before.
3. The appeals and lawsuits over who gets to go to an IB school are getting ridiculous
4. There are several under capacity schools that also have IB accreditation.

Making regional programs is a many birds, one stone opportunity.

I agree, but it's ridiculous to have that many students be bused much further away when they could easily make RM a regional IB. They are increasing transportation costs rather than decreasing it.

Not sure that’s actually the case, as Kennedy is becoming the DCC version of RMIB. That’s how the county explained it. Einstein is not.

Kennedy will have to convince the families that they can provide the same High School experience as well...sports..extra curriculars...PTA etc before some families will leave RM or Einstein.

Some of us don't have either as an option.

? every HS is assigned a regional IB school. Are you saying you don't have the option because it's too far?

If you are in the DCC, you only have the ability to attend IB without being accepted via test-in if you go to Einstein. Kennedy is the new regional IB that is test-in only.

I’m not sure what you mean. But I agree with poster who said that Kennedy would have to be as good overall as Einstein to justify going there for the IB program over staying at Einstein for IB.

Einstein is our home school. I know lots of families who opted for Einstein for the IB program rather than apply to Kennedy. Staying with your friends and families you know, having established sports and fine arts programs, these are all reasons to do IB at Einstein. We know kids who went to Eastern and Takoma magnets who decided not to apply to any programs and do IB at Einstein instead. DC is choosing between Blair magnet, CAP and Einstein IB right now. We personally know the cohort there and would support Them if they turned down the Blair programs to do IB at Einstein. (Go ahead and start the flame throwing!)

I agree. It is hard for me to see the appeal of Kennedy if your home school is Einstein. I have a kid in CAP and think highly of the program and school for that particular kid but Einstein is a better choice for my other child who has no interest in Kennedy.

I don't think that's true. DCC students can still attend Kennedy via the choice process, and then once there select IB as their academy. They have the diploma programme and the certificate programme.
