$499k for the one you agreed on. Two flights of 8 stairs / 16 stairs total each way. $770K for the one you want. Is there some other factor (aside from an elevator) to justify the higher cost? Have you looked at more condos in the $500K range that may have an elevator? Many suggestions were researched and posted for you by other posters. My advice remains the same. Go with what you both agreed to, do not go cheaper for more stairs and a loft you won’t use. Steps will Be miserable, but 16 stairs are easier to sell than 32 stairs each way. If you can find everything with an elevator in the price range, get it. Again, I like the one you agree on for $499K, if you’re already doing steps, go with it. It’s your house. You both agree on it. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2745-W-Lawrence-Ave-2E-Chicago-IL-60625/2085435426_zpid/ |
OP here. He annoys me too. We set a budget - $800,000, and the one I want falls into that category. He can get the rooftop deck and I can the elevator. It also comes with attached heated parking. |
OP here. No, which is why I feel less stairs is important. |

You could say this about every Democratic run state. |
OP here. We will likely get a nanny, but there are several great daycare within a mile from either place. |
OP here. The highest priced one has an elevator, a rooftop deck ( he will use it), and attached heated parking. I think it’s well worth the price for those three things. The stairs aren’t terrible in the one we agreed on, but I know it will get hard with 1-2 kids, a stroller, diaper bag, etc. We have not found anything comparable in that price range, but we can afford the most expensive one. We live in an elevator building now. |
I wouldn’t do stairs with kids, groceries, strollers, etc etc. that would get very old, very fast. I’d keep looking. I think the deck is awesome and worth it so you can have outside time with the kids without leaving or whatever, but no way would I agree to know elevator. What if you’re sick? Injured? Have surgery? Anything can happen. Surprises me a modern building has no elevator. |
Some Chicago walkups have 3 flights ( 24 stairs or more) just to get from the first to the second floor. |

Good lord. People are acting as if living in walk ups with a child is such a challenging hardship. Hello, hordes of people living in large cities including NYC manage it daily.
I would not pay the high price for the elevator. Neither would the rooftop get much use. I vote for the one you guys agreed on. |
Not OP but I’m from Chicago and rooftop decks are huge in Chicago. Chicago is a big rooftop deck and bar city. We have a rooftop deck and we use it most of the year. We have never had any issue with entertaining with a baby. I would go with the most expensive because it’s a steal for that neighborhood. |
