Are MC magnet programs worthwhile

I agree, this is a terrible thread. Sometimes I think people come to this website for the sole purpose of taking other people’s kids down a peg or three.

Once stupid parents start bragging about "perfect SAT/ACT/GPA" or use words like "genius" to describe their kids, you know it's going to end up in a sh8t pool.

I don't think any parent described their kid as a genius. It was a teacher saying they have run into 1 genius in many years. One parent noted her child did very well in the program but would never think she was a genius. Its MCPS..there is lots of grade inflation. Only 1/2 the day is spent in magnet classes. I think the OP was just trying to rile people up.

This is correct. No one has used the word “genius” to describe their kid.

One person did use the expression “perfect SAT/GPA,” and that kind of assertion is based on objective facts. I don’t see what the issue is there.

+1 less than 280 are bottom kids at TPMS

I just read from another thread that these math geniuses at TPMS like to throw poop at each other in the bathrooms.

your statement doesn't even make sense. MCPS offered what was better than other publics and privates but your children didn't receive a world-class education? STOP.THE.DRAMA.

DP: Did you see the word “county” in PP’s assessment?

I concur with PP. I think most MCPS schools are resting on the fact that public education in the US today is generally awful compared to other highly industrialized nations. Magnets are on the level of what I learned in excellent private schools in the 1980s. Sans computers until junior year and absolutely without the Internet or most of the tech crutches so widespread today. If the teacher showed a rare film, we paid attention because the option to Google the clip before the test simply didn’t exist. Redoing something was laborious (and almost never allowed) so we had to be meticulous.

I'm afraid you didn't quite get it. It's the gen end plebes who throw poop at each other, while TPMS geniuses are busy solving integral equations.

DP: in truth, it’s both groups. It’s the same stress response we see in prisoners and lower primates in zoos and research facilities. Which makes me really sad because I think the magnet program is actually the gentlest, most encouraging way for a NT kid to experience MCPS.

IQ, achievement, you name it. If it's an intelligence or achievement test it comes back 99th percentile. My sibling did not prep for the SAT yet scores were high enough for HPY. Sibling was also very relaxed about school. Things were very easy.

Such kids exist so stop jumping on PP.

+1

My kid is one of those. Perfect SAT scores, 10 scores of five on APs, straight As in an MCPS magnet.

No wringer, no prepping, and I take zero credit. This is how this kid came into the world.

Please, would you share your kid's MAP-M score(s) in MS?

10 APs with score of 5 + perfect SAT/ACT, that’s not impressive. Every other kid in magnet has that. What’s so special??

Only 300 students a year get a perfect SAT score and I highly doubt that 50 of them live in Montgomery County. The average SAT score for the Magnet program is very high and they typically have between 35-40 NMSFs and I am sure several students get perfect scores but perhaps not half

If you are curious about perfect SAT and ACT scorers from our area, you can check each year's Presidential Scholar Candidate list. Here's the 2019 one: https://www2.ed.gov/programs/psp/2019/candidates.pdf. Not all states require perfect scores--it's supposed to be the top 50 scoring boys and girls from each State for a single-sitting SAT or ACT (including ties if there are more than 50), but for Maryland that always means a perfect score. There are some kids who are designated as candidates due to accomplishment in arts, but the kids without asterisks are there due to scores.
