Why are boys who feel like girls "really girls"? Why aren't they really boys who don't feel the way society says stereotypical boys feel? I seriously don't get this issue. I don't think it's liberal or accepting to have a boy cut off his penis because he doesn't think he feels like a 'real' boy on the inside. Bizarre.
It's especially nonsensical for children, who are thinking and feeling all kinds of crazy stuff until the dust settles.

I wanted a tail when I was a kid. Should I have demanded I be treated like a monkey?

Good news! There can! And there can ALSO be people who are transgender or non-binary.

You really think there are people who are somehow really girls born in “boy bodies” and vice versa? Really?

And they can still be identified biologically as male or female. Because science. There are so many awesome lawsuits just waiting to happen if the county really agrees to a third gender. I identify as hexadecimal. If we don't get 78 identified and recognized as x, I'm going to sue the county!

+ 1 million

The kids need help and trained professionals would be helpful.

Adding an X gender is decidedly not helpful.

I’m a school counselor. I have worked with transgender kids. I am convinced that yes, there are boys who are actually girls in terms of their gender identity, and vice versa. There also are boys who are effeminate and don’t fit into any socially acceptable “mold” of a boy, and vice versa. All of this is ok. We all need to challenge stereotypes and allow kids to be who they are. We need all gender bathrooms, we need to teach kids to be inclusive and respectful of everyone, AND we need trained staff who can help kids explore their identity in healthy, safe ways. And that includes teachers who are willing to use kids’ preferred pronouns etc. All the judgment helps no one.

I think this is still up in the air. Or at least there was some talk about gender neutral restrooms last year. The county did a big study on converting restrooms to gender neutral ones at each school. Not sure what the outcome will be for that.

If they change restrooms to gender neutral, then they would likely also have to change locker rooms.

If there are X locker rooms, will they need to hire X staff to monitor them since no students can be unsupervised in locker rooms anymore?

Think of all the cleaning supplies that could be bought with the money wasted on pandering to a mental illness.
It’s shit like this that infuriates parents when we get shaken down for things like paper towels and Clorox wipes.

This parent isn't infuriated.

This one is. There are so many priorities. Like keeping our kids safe from sexual predators.

Instead, outside groups are influencing what our public schools focus on

I know lots of parents have asked for lots of things from MCPS (smaller class sizes, for one!) and those parents are completely dismissed.

How many parents lobbied to have this changed? Maybe if we can get that many parents to lobby for smaller class sizes, then we could get that also?

I can’t believe I’m acknowledging your hateful question, but in the event that you’re not a bigot and rather just an idiot, you should know that adding the option to classify gender X costs $0, and smaller class sizes costs millions.

If you bigots keep supporting morons like Trump and DeVos, then class size is going to increase, not get smaller.

No need to call anyone moron. To the PP the other poster is entitled to her/his opinion.

MCPS can’t focus on smaller class sizes when it’s responding to outside lobby groups trying to force their agenda on children

NP, you really are a moron with that dumbass response.

You probably work for rainbow youth

Of course! I grew up with one in a very small town, and I'm in my forties.

These outside lobby groups represent the students who may otherwise be ostracized. There are plenty of outside groups that influence public schools--if you are concerned you might want to start with the groups that make billions of dollars by forcing useless testing onto our kids. Not the ones making diddly squat trying to keep kids safe from bigots.

I appreciate your message but why do we need all gender bathrooms? I'm guessing you have a degree in education or psychology or some similar field. Can you explain it professionally with out using 'safe space' or 'making someone comfortable' or 'being accommodating'. I can understand the pragmatic value, but seriously... what is the need[i]?

The same can be said of single-gender bathrooms too, of course.

Science is more complicated than you think it is, and nobody is asking for people's karyotypes at the bathroom door.
