Why would A SN Parent Not Pick Up Their Child From School When Called?

I do not blame the parent AT ALL in this situation.
There are times when you just don’t have the bandwidth anymore, especially if you’re dealing with another issue at home and stuck waiting for a repair man.

Our school is very good at managing such situations, it welcomes students with SN who cannot be educated in nearby schools, and police has never been called. Seems to me like this school team lacks experience.

What school is this? My school (not a public) insists I come pick up in situations as described by the Op. I would love to find a school that is staffed to handle these situations. I am at my wit’s end and lucky that I have not been fired.

We had two workers run after the child until police came. Police had to bring the child back. If we are not professionally trained and have the green light to restrain a child, then we can not do it. Police or parents can

This truy shows that the staff at your school are incompetent. By law the school has to educate this child. The child needs behavioral support not to be sent home or man handled by police. You are ignorant and if this was my kid and I read this I would raise holy hell at the school about this post.

As the parent of a child with special needs, it bothers me to no end when I hear stories like this about other parents with SN children basically antagonizing the school and administration. It's the child who suffered here. If the parent was indeed a few min away waiting for a repair man (really?) it doesn't take a few minutes to drive and get your kid and bring them home. Sounds to me like a parent trying to prove a point and test the school.

You are obnoxious. You have no clue what is going on here and given that the poster is very biased why are you jumping in. I don't know what goes on in your county but in mine the parents who have been speaking up and "antogonizing" the school system have made it a better, safer place for kids with disabilities.

Op is this Loudoun? Sure sounds like Loudoun.

Yup.

I also do not know why the school would call the police.

+1 who’s doing the escalating here?

I want to rename this thread “Why can’t a group of teachers and administrators get a 2nd or 3rd graded to class?” I mean COME ON. 2nd or 3rd grade!?

Private schools are not required to provide FAPE so of course they can just send the child home.

See, I’m wondering if if’s Fairfax, which is probably being very, very careful about any kind of physical contact, restraint, movement of a child in light of the recent scandal around confinement and restraint methods.

I don't think you can judge all 2nd or 3rd grade students as the same. I have seen some very volatile and dangerous young children. The school did the right thing by not physically restraining or manhandling the child.

You can get a child to come inside without man handling him. You just have to be patient.

Anonymous wrote:It is a denial of FAPE to ask parents to come pick up a child with unwanted behaviors. How many times do you think the school has called in the past?

Exactly... parents of special needs kids get called all the time for situations school should be able to handle. Parents of special needs kids have jobs, etc. just like any other parent.

I’ve also know situations were adults inadvertently injured kids this age trying to get them off the floor at Costco or away from a play structure. When I took the training on restraints, we were told that sometimes you can’t move a child. All you can do is keep a child from hurting themselves or others. That might look like three adults just standing there.

Really? So, due to their lack of skill the police came and manhandled a 2nd grader, dragging him off and you think that that is a good thing?
