Should MCPS loose funding for failure to protect children from sexual abuse?

Maybe because “the incident occurred off-campus and did not involve students, but was rather a domestic matter”. Do you think he was abusing students?

He is a violent offender who worked in a MCPS elementary school. MCPS put him on Administrative Leave for a reason - he was arrested for a sexual assault.

Give the community a letter and let parents check in with their children. Give the community the contact for Special Victims Unit of the police department if there is information discovered by parents that the police should know. Being silent doesn't serve the community or protect the welfare of children. Silence only protects the jobs of administrators in MCPS who don't want the public to know their employee was arrested for sexual assault.

Were the parents at DuFief ES notified at least?

I could possibly see not sending out an MCPS-wide email, but the parents at that school cluster need to be notified.

This man worked 32 years in MCPS. He probably worked in multiple schools over the course of his career. Families also move from school to school. A county-wide email via Dr. Smith could be done easily to maximize the opportunity of reaching as many parents as possible that had children interact with this employee.

What would be the downside of a county-wide email? As far as whether or not DuFief ES families received an email, the article implies no but perhaps after the story hit the news MCPS sent an email to at least them.

What falsehood. Hogan is no friend of public school system. He is in the pockets of business interests.

Yes, he is. Shortening the school year because of Ocean City?
I hope he gets voted out.

He did not shorten the school year. It it exactly the same length it has been for years.

Minimum is 180 days since 2010. Since Hogan was elected in 2015 I don't think it had anything to do with him. It is up to you local school district to decide the days.

But MCPS had more days than the minimum when they were allowed to dictate their own calendar. They were lost to snow days some years and not others.

Agree completely!

But MCPS would much rather sweep incidents/news stories like this under the rug. That is absolutely their MO. Has been for the past decade.

And people know this. Predators are safe in MCPS. Kids, not so much.

Don’t be dishonest. The school year needs to be 180 days. It is still 180 days. If you want a longer school year, or year round school, you can absolutely advocate for that.

MCPS decided what days it wants to offer off and finalizes the school calendar. Blame MCPS.

Who gives a rats a*s about the school calendar when children are being abused by MCPS employees???? Start your own thread to talk about the calendar issue.

It's the same number of days. It's not the same length. You can't lengthen summer break without shortening the school year. That's basic math.

When MCPS could start before Labor day and end after 6/15 the school day was 2 days longer. I can not blame MCPS for a decision made by Hogan.

Basic math also says that 182 is less than 184

Sorry this is so hard for you Don.

Length of the School Year
The Annotate Code of Maryland, Section 7-103 requires that schools be open for pupil attendance 180 days and a minimum of 1,080 hours during a ten-month period.
Code of Maryland Regulation 13A.03.02.12 defines the high school year as 180 days with a minimum requirement of 1,170 hours during a ten-month period.
