You're seriously equating private school with public charters? Also: he is responsible for the public charter system. He is not responsible for private schools. Do principals of private schools ever NOT send their kids to that school and get away with it? NO |
FYI- IB does not mean public Charters |
Yes, we know that. That's PPs point. |

Kihn was lying on his twitter profile that he was a "public school parent" until he changed it suddenly yesterday.
Screenshot here: https://twitter.com/Evan52314/status/1044613841282306048 Between this and WaPo's error in saying his children attend DCI, I think he either misled the mayor's staff or they were at least unaware of where his kids attend school. |
Unlike Antwan Wilson, Kihn is not a DC outsider. He lives in G'town and his wife ran for Ward 2 council a while back. He probably has lots of connections with DC education reform world. I'm sure he's aware of the optics problem of kids at WIS versus a DCPS like Hyde-Addison. Remember when Adrian Fenty promised as candidate to pull his twins out of private to go to DCPS? Apparently he hadn't cleared it with his wife at the time. Of course there was a very convenient transfer to Lafayette from West outside the lottery. Anyway, Kihn's ideas and experience sound more relevant to DC circa 2008, not 2018. We're way past the massive school closure and charter opening phase. Neighborhood schools have been specializing for years with bilingual programs, arts integration, STEM focus, International Baccalaureate, PTA-funded teachers, hearing-impaired programs, Autism classrooms, etc. etc. etc. We even have single-gender public schools. More "specialization" will not generate more equity. So long as the lottery circus drives so many education decisions, we'll still have a split system between those who can afford private schools AND live in best DCPS neighborhood and those who don't. As an independent consultant, Kihn has nothing to lose for stepping into DME role post-scandals. Any action can be spun into a turnaround or improvement. He can always go back to consulting. At least Bowser doesn't have to go into the election with both DME and chancellor slots empty. Whatever blowback, if any, from Kihn having kids in private is easily offset by his contacts and resume. |
| WTF are you talking about the election for? For all practical purposes Bowser ran unopposed in the primary and is again in the general. |
| Another pathetic Bowser appointee. |
Look at it this way, maybe he can bring some insight into DCPS/PCS that he sees at his kids private. I don't agree with the choice, but want can I do about it other than see the bright side of things. |
I can understand someone not familiar with DC schools not realizing that "DC International School" and "Washington International School" are not the same thing. What's a shame is that the Post has reporters covering local politics who aren't familiar with the schools. |
Just a guess, but based on the old Twitter "bio", his kids may have been in public schools until recently, and he never changed the "bio"- that seems like the type of thing most people don't pay attention to on an ongoing basis. Also, the reporter probably got her facts from spokespeople in the Mayor's office- I am willing to bet that someone there said "DC International School", not paying attention to the nuance. Perry Stein is a pretty solid reporter and I am willing to bet she knows the difference between the two schools and got bad info. |
If Obama sent his kids to a DCPS people here would be complaining about how the security needed was making them late or making it harder for their lives. |
I believe his oldest child is in Kindergarten, so if they were in public schools, it wasn't long enough to really experience them. |
I bet $10 they were at Hyde and then bailed rather than going to the Meyer swing space. |
| JFC. I’m writing in Vincent Gray. |
| This guy is not going to make the difference. Why do we keep setting a low bar? |
