| The Catholic Church needs to dissolve and start over. |
|
No one can deny the Catholic Church has a problem in this regard, but there are so many good and kind priests and the Catholic Church is overall a force for good in the world.
I truly wish church leadership would confront this horrific problem publicly and comprehensively and start handing over anyone in the church who is accused of these crimes to law enforcement. And if your child or loved one is hurt by a Catholic priest, call 911 and get the guy arrested immediately. Don’t leave it up to the Catholic Church to deal with the guy. |
I disagree with this. Yes the Catholic Church does a lot of charity work, but so do other religions and non-religious charity organizations. The Catholic Church has enabled pedophiles, systemically murdered non-believers, had at best a mixed record when it came to confronting the Nazis, and espouses a doctrine that subjugates and demeans the individual in favor of loyalty to priests. It is not unique in these regards--certainly other religions are guilty of horrific crimes as well--but I would simply argue that, on balance, the existence of the Catholic Church has done more that is bad for the world than good. |

I think it’s horrible. But for something like his to happen many people have to be complicit. That’s enraging. A family knowing and not exposing them. Or the coverup in this case. I’m hoping more can be done in the future. Confused why a priest was alone with an 18 month old.
It doesn’t steer me away from trying to be a good person and attending services. We all sin. There are plenty of bad people, that haven’t been caught. The problem is thinking that a human because they have a position of power is more pious than another. Are teachers more pious? Not really, plenty abuse children. Pediatricians? Parents? They help give out the word, but a priest is just a human after all. |
Oh FFS. Just because Breitbart seizes upon every "man bites dog" story - or rather, "female teacher has sex with student" story, doesn't change the fact that most rapists, molesters, pedos are MALE. - Not the PP you are talking to |
But the church leadership is keeping it going by covering it up and moving the priests all over the country as soon as someone is onto them. Who do we think is going to be a lone voice that will be powerful enough to make a difference when it's coming all the way from the top? |
Is that what the report says? That currently priests are moved around when found to be pefophiles. I thought the report was for 60's, 70's and 80's. |
For me, file this next to "Mussolini kept the trains running on time". (for the record, he did not). |
The abuse is documented from 1940 to 2018. Still going on in 2018. See article below: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pghcitypaper.com/pittsburgh/nearly-100-predator-priests-uncovered-in-pittsburghs-catholic-church-more-than-300-statewide/Content%3foid=10001261&media=AMP%2bHTML |

I am to poster who grew up in the Pittsburgh Diocese.
I am outraged by this report, but also appalled that so many “good” priests kept their mouths shut and didn’t risk their careers by not speaking out against this horrific abuse. Did they not hear rumors? See inappropriate activity between priests and children? Such cowards. |
| To be defensive of the Catholic church at this point is being complicit. I was raised in the church but refuse to follow its teachings now that it has been proven time and time again that it is one of the most hypocritical institutions ever to exist. The rise Trump is childs play compared to this. As Christians, if we are that, we have an obligation to protect the least among us. |
+10000 You don't have to actually molest kids yourself, to be complicit in a pedophile ring. "Good priests" my ass. |
+1. The full report is here: https://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/tribdem.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/8/64/86477024-9ffa-11e8-82d3-1795acf52e56/5b733183e8c7d.pdf.pdf Discussion of past abuses vs. the present situation begins on page 297. That section is pretty short and worth a read. “Thanks to the documents, though, our inside look revealed that there were still discrepancies between the church’s internal behavior and public positions. Known offenders were still secretly provided financial support. “Retired” child abusers were permitted to live in church- run facilities located near schools. Dioceses resisted calls to release abusers’ names, while heralding their compliance with new mandated reporter laws. And most striking to us were cases in which the dioceses obtained child abuse “clearances” for employees who had no criminal record – because the bishop had never reported prior incidents of abuse. So there would be the clearance, right in the same file documenting unreported abuse. That is not where we needed the dioceses to be.” Only one current bishop testified for the grand jury, which is maddening, but it looks like things are finally getting better? “The changes Persico announced included an expanded set of definitions of child abuse; new efforts to cross-check personnel with previously withheld diocesan records through the Diocesan Office for the Protection of Children and Youth; and the public identification of persons who have been credibly accused of actions ranging from furnishing pornography to direct, sexual assaults of minors. These are wise and welcome policies; we encourage other bishops to follow Erie’s example.” |
They can announce whatever they want to deflect attention. The institution is a pedophile magnet and pedophile's needs must be satisfied one way or another. In other words, nice that they have "expanded definitions" and "new efforts" fifteen years on. I have a bridge to sell to anyone who really believes they're sincere about following through. |
| Put an end to clerical celibacy for crying out loud. |
