Kids take the ACT and SAT at various times throughout the year. I doubt we'll see much difference. The AP exam issue is an interesting one. If there weren't compression on the back end, I could see your point. But by setting both a start and end date, I think we'll actually see that the kids are in school approximately the same by the exam dates. Maybe with a shift of a couple of days one way or the other. AP exams happen in May. Since the kids still have to be in school the same number of days as before, those days just have to be collapsed. Fewer short weeks, shorter spring break, all of that compensates for the week later kids start. If AP exams were a driving concern, we'd start school the beginning of August. |
I would love to know if jurisdictions that start the school year earlier have better AP test score results. Mos mid-west schools are starting next week. I wonder if those kids on the average do better for nAPs? |
Except I’m a democrat. I didn’t support Bernie Sanders and I won’t vote for Jealous because I know we don’t live in a world of endless free money. It’s a shame because I would have voted for Baker. Hogan is the less objectionable of two candidates I’m not crazy about. |
I just read it, and the fiscal part of it is lacking and misleading. He claims all the funding will come from the Fix the Fund Act. What that does is take revenues from gambling that were intended for education but spent on other items, and spend them back on education. In principle, I agree with that. What happened (let's simplify) is if the gambling tax brought in $10mln, then they gave that to education, but took $10mln out of the general fund contribution to education, so no net gain for education. Then they take the $10mln that they _were_ going to give to education for the general fund, and spend it on other projects. What Jealous's plan seems to not mention is -- what happens to all those other projects? They all get cut then, or we need to spend more. |
Is your claim that as soon as Hogan was elected students got dumber? While I agree it's reasonable to be aware about continued ranking slides, doesn't it make sense that the education children received up to the point their scores began decreasing plays a part? Hogan was not responsible by any metric for the education that occurred, or didn't, before he was elected. One should also consider what else has happened. Does Maryland have more non-native English speakers in the educational system now? That will affect our ranking. Have Maryland's monetary policies contributed to further division between haves and have-nots? Have Marylanders gotten more racist, segregating themselves and thus their children? That will affect our ranking. I live in Baltimore County, where several of the schools do not have air conditioning, and children are expected to learn in classrooms that are extremely hot. Studies show that heat affects our ability to learn. Have we considered how weather changes, or even climate change, affect how our test scores look year to year (in areas where schools are not effectively climate controlled)? I suppose it's possible that as soon as Hogan was elected, children lost educational levels. And that nothing that happened before or after, except things he controls, have anything to do with the fact that Maryland hasn't pulled itself back up to the top yet. I don't think that's a reasonable analysis, however. |
Are they? I’m from Wisconsin and state law is that school cannot start until September 1st (depending on how Labor Day falls at could be a bit later than that, but school never starts in August). My siblings’ children in the Twin Cities (three different school districts) aren’t starting until September 4th either. |
| Hogan hasn't made Maryland great again. |
Yeah - i don't think "most" midwestern schools are starting next week. I think most of the country is after Labor Day (including, for example, Chicago public schools). The South/Southwest sometimes starts before Labor Day. |
|
Before Hogan 23 of 24 school districts started before Labor Day.
I don't care when Chicago or Miami or Tuscon starts. I know my kids both suffered on APs this year because only some of their teachers even bothered to account for the later start. By the end of the year, they had been told things would be better this year. I suspect that things in OC will be similar. Last year people used the extra week in OC but this year they had time to plan to go somewhere else. |
You really believe your kids did worse on the ap tests because school stsrtrd a week late? Really? |
+ 1. Are people forgetting that he is a Republican? Of course he’s not going after trump with the same fervor as the democrats. |
Signed, an independent who can’t stand trump and supports Hogan. |
Lets assume we accept your premise. Given that's Hogan has still opposed lots of what Trump has done, what would going after Trump with greater "fervor" actually accomplish? I mean maybe some would find it cathartic, but I don't see how it would have any actual influence over anything. |

Hogan = trump
trump = Hogan If you vote for Hogan you are a racist trumptard. Repeat this in front of the mirror until it sinks in. |
