Our neighbor went to Yale from Wilson and barely lasted a year. Very sad. She still hasn't enrolled somewhere.

There was a recent year in which the jail track definitely outpaced the Yale track.

You should head back over to the MD/VA public school forum where anyone actually believes your insecure and untrue proclamations. You sound desperate for validation of your choices.

Yah disregard that the graduation was 75% for years until DC put in the new standards for low functioning children to help them graduate. Attendance and class work optional! Not to mention reading

This, there are great kids at Wilson but the majority are the just pushed alone DC kids like the rest of DC HSs. They receive the typical (stay registered and graduate) policies that are so pervasive across DC. Those kids aren’t going to Ivy’s, hell UDC is a stretch for most of them and that place is basically 13th grade at Ballou

Wilson HS is definitely a bit of a mess but I think my kid is going to love college after his chaotic HS experience. I think he will struggle a bit in the beginning but then he will catch up and enjoy the normalcy of it all. He got a 34 ACT score on his first try so some learning must be going on at school. He also has 4s and 5s on all his AP exams so far. How they get any teaching and learning done there, I'm not really sure as classes are overcrowded, some teachers are incompetent and lazy, and some kids are very disruptive but somehow they are able to pull through. Not sure I would put my kid in Wilson if I was doing it again but he mostly has been happy and has learned some valuable life skills along the way.

I'm glad you had a good outcome PP. I wish that for all kids. I also wish in the college acceptance humble brag, people mentioned all the schools. A really bright/achieving kid going to Harvard is to be applauded. So is a mid range student going to a mid range school . What's worrisome is when they don't find a spot - that is worthy of discussion. Are any falling through the cracks at Wilson? and if so, why? At my child's charter they don't all go to Harvard, but IMO they do better with placement than would have happened without the education and intensive college placement assistance they received- so I chalk that up as a DC success story.

They will go to UDC community college. UDC 4-year programs are not open to all anymore. I actually went to UDC and so did several of my European friends. It's a cheaper way to get a 4-year degree.
Seems like you are telling the world that UDC sucks and teaches nothing. Maybe our high schools in Europe were so good that we all should've gone straight to grad school in US. My sister, our friends and myself all went to good schools for grad school - AU, GT, GW and UM.
I have met a few DCPS kids who had no business having a high school diploma, but I didn't meet them at UDC. All students in my program belong there, and came to school ready to learn.

Wilson academic standards are certainly lower than those of the private high school I attended as a teenager. However, because she is smart, she will learn quickly and do well. Yes, students who have gone to rigorous private schools that cost at least 40K a year will find the adjustment much easier, but most intelligent 18 year olds will pick things up quickly and do just fine in the long run. There is a lot of nasty garbage on this thread, and it only speaks ill of the trolls that are posting.

Honestly, if a kid does the homework at Wilson, it’s pretty easy to be an A student. Doing homework half the time gets you Bs. Heck, someone can miss a lot of school and still get Cs.

But I worked hard and asked for lots of help and graduated with honors. There were lots of other people like me and they all went on to be 'productive members of society'. Being in the middle of the pack at an ivy sets you up well for life.

Me too. It also really doesn’t matter at all if you’re middle of the pack in a great college. You get the network no matter what. Grad school is what counts.

The relevance of this comment is what? To prove that my kid or others that get all A's at Wilson are not smart? My point was made to reply to all the snarky people saying Wilson grads can't do well at Ivy league schools. And to the PP who asked if all DCUM poster's kids are above average the answer is "some of them are". Have a nice day

UDC is changing. They don't do automatic admissions anymore like PP said. My sister went from UDC to UPenn for grad school(she did 2 hard-won unpaid internships each summer, one at the World Bank!) It is a reasonable alternative for kids that live nearby and aren't ready to leave home yet but don't want to waste a year at a 2 year college. More parents really should consider it.
