Cry me a freakin' river. |
Do you also say this to those who are already at a desirable school EOTP but lottery because they want immersion, like the PP? Or do you reserve your resentment for people WOTP? |
We live in Ward 3 but spent two years of Pre-K at a Title 1 DCPS before moving on to our IB. We didn't create any more instability than the other UMC parents at the school, all of whom left before K, even though they were IB. |
wrong. I also dont believe you live Eotp. I actually do live here and send my kid to our IB even though I dont want to. Not all of us can afford a million dollar plus shitty house in AU park or further and the cost of an additional car for community purposes. |
I am IB at my title 1 school and like all the UMC families is trying to get my kid out by K. Maybe if the school actually welcomed us instead of making us feel like interloping gentrifiers we would stick around. They certainly like to take our money, time and influence. But ask for more rigor and we are told to sit down and let the school handle these decisions. UMC kids are a total after thought. So I don't care if there is "instability" because I know I am not the cause of it. |
^^ you sound like a parent I hope isn't at our kids' EOTP school. Good grief. |
Are you kidding? #26 at SWS means you had a fantastic #! DD was 200+ at SWS and still got in somewhere... |
Your IB is EATON and you're COMPLAINING about your Ker not getting anywhere?!!?! Are you f*cking kidding? Most people lotterying would kill to have their IB ES be Eaton... |
Holy guacamole, yes, that does seem like a huge jump. |
This is the first year doing the lottery. I didn't know what to expect, and yes, at first I was disappointed... until I saw the positions for others. |
I don't think the PP was saying that she lived EOTP. Her point (with which I agree) is simply that there isn't any difference between the (now quite numerous) UMC families EOTP and those WOTP. The median HHI of 75K is due to the legacy population, not the gentrifiers. I'm not saying that Ward 3 residents aren't privileged with regard to schools, but the fact is that many EOTP parents (especially those most vocal on this forum) could afford to live WOTP, just in a shittier house and with less urban flair. |
NP. The PP is Latina and is seeking language immersion. Just like tons of people on the other side of the park. I get that you envy her privilege of a great IB, but there is nothing wrong with her being frustrated that she didn't get into the type of school she thinks is best for her kid. Just because others have it worse doesn't mean she can't vent. |
For anyone, including the original poster, seeking PK3 after unsatisfying lottery results, consider Meridian Public Charter School. Last year, at least, they had spaces post-lottery. It's conveniently located for many (13th and V). We've been there for the past year (PK3), and having been waitlisted again at our inbound school, plan to go for PK4. It doesn't have a great reputation on this board, but it is really worth considering. We've been very happy with our child's teacher, he has learned a ton, and likes going to school. Aftercare is mixed, but that seems to be true in most schools. |
May as well get on the waitlist for Tyler Spanish immersion if you're willing to do the commute. Houston didn't fill its bilingual spot last year but I don't think they have bilingual K yet so that won't work for you. Also, if you move IB for Oyster (which if you live IB for Eaton you can likely afford to do) then your K will definitely have bilingual school next year and your younger child will probably get in for PK4. |
I say this to people who have an excellent in-bound option and are on a public board complaining that they didn't get into some other specific school. I don't "resent" the PP complaining about not getting in anywhere, I just think it's a stupid complaint. And I'd think it was a stupid complaint from anyone in a good charter or public EOTP or whatever. I mean, yeah, feel sad that you didn't get exactly what you wanted, but your kid will be going to an excellent elementary school. Have some perspective. |
