Tell me about the University of Wisconsin

This will reduce the quality of the faculty.
Of course, they will not defund the football team.

Yup. As the parent of a high school senior applying to Madison, this is my primary concern - that the quality of the school will decline because of bad choices by state leaders.

Relax. WI will turn blue again soon.

The only thing you’ll get from Maryland is a chip on your shoulder that will last a lifetime.

If his dream school is Michigan, pretty sure he doesn't mind the cold.

Michigan is cold, but not Wisconsin cold.

Madison native here...I think Michigan winters are worse

Michigan is on the snowy side of the lake, but I believe that Madison temps are a bit lower.

Michigan is not on the snowy side of "the lake". For this purpose, they're not on the same lake.

Lake-effect snow goes W to E in all these places--which is why Buffalo and Kalamazoo both get worse lake effect snow than Detroit.

UW Alum here.

Yes it is!

Fantastic all-college experience with strong majors in many departments. Madison is close to Milwaukee and Chicago, and Minneapolis is a little farther, so getting to "major league" cities is easy, but there is really no reason. Top music and cultural acts come to the city, and as others have said, it has an independent cultural scene apart from the University.

I can't recommend it enough.

Agree. Madison is always sunny unless it is actually snowing. It isn't dreary in the winter the way Michigan and Ohio are.

4 months of it arctic cold .

Why assume summers won't be there. I worked there in the summers every year. CUNA, Capitol, Oscar Mayer, and some of the bio, compl sci start ups, and the lake cannot be beaten by any setting.

Madison is also rated among the top places to live and UW is often rated atop the best quality public educations in the country.

There are better schools, but in terms of the people and experience, it is very special.

Agree with the first point.

They don't fund the football team. The UW athletic department has been operating in the black for decades and actually subsidizes the rest of the University; and they do things the right way, no bending of academic standards for the varsity athletes.

I’d rather be with in-state MD kids than a bunch of in-state WI or MI farm kids

What's wrong with farm kids?

Having taught them, I would say "nothing at all, except they are more likely to have gone to a small rural school that didn't offer many advanced classes."

My experience was that they were hard working, self-starters. They showed up for office hours, did their work, and were nice to have around. They said please and thank you.

Sounds just like the kids inside the beltway, right?

Yeah - the farm kids are going to be way more well adjusted. Probably for life.

I asked DD if this school was on her list and she said 'no, because it's mostly white preppy kids playing on a lake?'
Thoughts?

The same can be said for virtually every state flagship. Their funding is down, and most tenured positions are being replaced with non-tenured ones. But the funding issue has been the case for at least 10-12 years now. So draw your own conclusions.

The state of Illinois says: Wisconsin, hold my beer.

Illinois' budget issues aren't comparable to anywhere else in the country, and it's a travesty.

Wisconsin alum here. I let out a huge laugh when I read this. Sorry, but your daughter has no idea what she is talking about. She might be confusing it with Northwestern.

The word is provincial.

And you spelled parochial incorrectly.

I grew up in Madison and hear you can find beer there.

What do you expect? PP probably went to Maryland.

That made me laugh because no D1 program can make that claim. Heck, even the Ivies make accommodations for athletes.

Whoa, whoa there. Don’t drag NU into this. NU’s class of 2021 is 48% white. Madison is overall 75% white (couldn’t find class specific info). Madison IS lovely and the town is great too. But you have to admit the kid was spot on.

Yea, all those peppy kids from the farms...

Try to make your stereotypes consistent.

+1. The daughter sounds like a winner.
