Is circumcision for non-religious reasons ghetto, trashy or low class?

Under what conditions would it not be sad to you? You think it's sad because you consider it genital mutilation. Many do not (cause it isn't) and aren't sad at all. Most circumcised men do not walk around feeling mutilated.

Since when is part of the definition of being mutilated feeling mutilated? Come on, ladies, pro or con, how about more robust reasoning, please?!?!?!

Well that's not exactly the way I meant it, but OK. You win.

I'm not the PP above, but i'll bite. Definition of "mutilation" from Miriam Webster:

Main Entry:
mu·ti·late
Pronunciation:
\?myü-t?-?l?t\
Function:
transitive verb
Inflected Form(s):
mu·ti·lat·ed; mu·ti·lat·ing
Etymology:
Latin mutilatus, past participle of mutilare, from mutilus truncated, maimed
Date:
1534
1 : to cut up or alter radically so as to make imperfect <the child mutilated the book with his scissors>
2 : to cut off or permanently destroy a limb or essential part of : cripple
synonyms see maim
— mu·ti·la·tion \?myü-t?-?l?-sh?n\ noun
— mu·ti·la·tor \?myü-t?-?l?-t?r\ noun

To those PPs arguing that circumcision constitutes "mutilation," how exactly does it fit into the definition above? "Robust" enough reasoning for you?

I am now convinced that it's pointless to engage any longer with the "it's mutilation" posters who verge on hysteria. They are absolutely dead set on making you and I feel like barbarians. Anything less than our howling contrition will not do. They are the extreme end of this position, as thoughtful arguments are made on both sides of this debate. Also, unless you spend your nights and days on certain Earth mother websites, most people around you do not care much about this either way and certainly do not label each other's decisions in this extreme manner.

Query? I'm from Europe where male circumcision is almost exclusively done only for religious reasons and I was quite surprised to find it so prevalent when I came here. Does anybody know what the origins of it being so common here are?

It is just another example of unnecessary medical procedures that doctors here can charge $$ for. That's how you get the most expensive healthcare system without the best health outcomes.

wow! same people who are anti-circ are posting over and over and over and over and over again...

sorry, but I don't know anyone who didn't circumcise their kid. I don't care if they did or didn't but for those who didn't I figure they're embarassed that they didn't. that's on them. for the record, iposted earlier about circumcising my son. i would do it again. it's what my husband had done; been done for centuries, no negative repurcussions as far as i can tell. and to compare it to female circumcision is just abominable or to 'cutting off one's limb' is just ridiculous.

I'll jump in with the pro-sex argument. Sex is better (for the man) when he has a foreskin. Personally, as a woman, I also prefer a foreskin on my partner- but I married a jew so I lost out. That said, there's no question it is a healthy normal body part that is best left on.

You're kidding, right? The greatest advances in medicine are made in the United States. Just ask all the wealthy Europeans and Saudi princes who fly into the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, etc., for treatment.

God, I can't stand liberals.

I think the whole health benefits arguement has been disproven for ages now.

UGH. "ghetto, trashy, or low class" can't you please be more explicit in what your personal problem is? or at least turn off the tv/take a look out side your stupid, vapid little world? There are people out there who by no fault of their own fit your degrading subject line description (I mean strictly economic, passing on the "low class" value judgment). Can you please get more creative, rather than trashing people while elevating yourself?

I should stop reading DCUM.

NP here. Didn't circumcise my son. Didn't find it necessary, neither did DH. Don't really care whether other people do or not. FWIW, of the people I know who I am close enough to ask about such things, we are the only ones who did not circ. One expressed regret, said if they were to do it over, they would not. The rest are happy with their decision, as are we.

Huh? How did you come to that conclusion?

I know only one family who circumcised their son (and they're Jewish). I didn't circumcise my son and I would make the same decision again. Boys have been left intact for centuries, no negative repercussions as I can tell.

My point is only that your experience may not be universal.

Live and let live. Who the hell cares what choice people make about circumcision...it's a personal thing. What a ridiculous post.
